Our favorite mall to Angeleno-gawk, The Grove, is planning to open an American Girl® retail branch in 2006, just the 3rd in the country. And these ain’t your mothers’ dolls. “Molly McIntire® is a lively, lovable schemer and dreamer growing up in 1944. The world is at war, and she misses her father who is overseas caring for wounded soldiers … ” So begins the backstory of Molly, one of the 10 “characters” from the high-end doll phenomenon owned by Mattel. You see, the American Girl® characters come from a wide range of “American” experiences across the 200+ years of our nation. There’s Kaya, the Native American in 1764; Addy, the escaped slave in 1864; Kit, the Midwesterner in the Great Depression, among others. See, it’s progressive American history (accessories not included). Howard Zinn must have the whole set of these dollies. To further give each character a sense of era, there are all sorts of props that go with each.
So let’s have a look at the merch. $84 is the base price for any of the dolls. So you’re already in for a Benjamin just to get started with this stuff. And that’s so just the beginning. This is a whole culture you are buying into. Using at that “lively, lovable schemer and dreamer” Molly, as an example, let’s look at the add-ons. Of course you have to have Molly’s Beach Chair ($20), Molly’s 1944 swimsuit ($24), Molly’s camping equipment ($18), Molly’s Dude Ranch Outfit ($24). And if Molly gets tired of standing, there’s Molly’s Chrome Table and Chairs ($65). The best part is that there is an accompanying series of books for each character that chronicals the adventures of your doll for you. There are over 20 (!) “Molly” books alone (such page-turners as “Molly Learns a Lesson” and “Molly’s Surprise”). Why have your girls imagine their own adventures for their dolls when Mattel can write them out and sell them to you?
Can’t you just see the trophy wives and their spoiled brats lined up at The Grove now? While you’re there snarking on them, grab some enchiladas at Loteria Grill and hoist a pitcher to American history and capitalism. Mainly the latter.

Okay, first of all, what toy company is not all about making money??? I realize the creator meant to use the dolls to open little girls’ eyes to history, and teach them about things like that, to instill a love of reading in them, and to challenge them to higher things than just being thin, wearing the “right” clothes, and playing with make-up so they look years older than they are… No matter what good intentions you start with, once the toy company gets control, it’s going to turn into a money-making scheme, and they’re going to charge whatever people will pay for something that is “popular.” Do you remember the Cabbage Patch craze in the 80′s? They were expensive in the beginning, and later, after the popularity had worn off, they had to lower the price in order to keep selling them. Eventually the company was sold to a larger toy company and now the prices are even less. American Girl will eventually run its course and then you’ll be free to gripe and complain about the next “cool” doll. Mark my words, it will happen, that’s just how the capitalistic system in America works. Supply and demand. Create a demand, supply for high dollars, until the gravy train runs out.
i dont think AG will ever fall to lower prices to many people want the dolls, that and the price to create dolls now for them is higher thats why they changed prices but eh thats just my thought

No – the only thing you get with the $100 purchase ($90 doll plus shipping) will be the doll and her pink shirt and leggings outfit, and a book. They do have the Just Like You meet outfit available for girls but you have to pay extra to purchase it. HTH
I can’t believe this. Did these people just discover the internet? Does this look like a message board? I have a feeling that the majority of people here are the kind to type “http://I’M LOOKING FOR CHEAP ORIGINAL DOLL IN BOX B4 XMAS!!!!!” into their web browsers and are confused when they get an error page
Hello, we are a military family and haven’t moved way too much in for during my daughters short 10 years of life. During our summer move her beloved American Girl Doll wandered off. She is an American Girl Today with red hair and green eyes….I found out today that she has be discontinued, if any one has one they are willing to sell please let me know she is truly lonely with out her.
If you want to find bargains on American Girl dolls and their accessories, you should troll Craigslist online, and go in person to Salvation Army & Goodwill Stores often….you never know what will pop up when….I’ve bought dolls at the (more savvy) charity stores for $35, but have also heard of folks buying them at those same charity stores in their town for $5 and under for an American Girl doll….also, keep an eye out at garage sales, esp if there are older teenagers (tired of dolls/high school students) running them.
