Burrito King Shatters Age Barrier, Stomachs

By Ryan - Monday August 01st 2005

everyone loves the King

For many octogenarians, the daily diet is nothing to toy with. You’re probably in constant worry about fiber, calcium, barium, chromium, iron, molybdenom, potassium, and a whole host of elements I couldn’t even begin to fathom.

That’s why I love days like today when you chance upon two ladies whispering conspiratorially at Burrito King on Hyperion. They couldn’t give a good goddamn about the nutritional value of the food, they know what they like, and it’s convenient. I look at these ladies and can only hope that I may be so lucky to reach the ripe 80s myself, sitting in boothy comfort and whispering strange old-man secrets to a conspirator.

What now?

In many ways Burrito King (silverlake edition as well as its two echo park brethren) epitomizes eastside Los Angeles like perhaps no other entity. You have a noted absence of glitterati, an abundance of giant burritos, curbside shack walk-up window service, usually a transient or two hanging out in one of the booths, old people and young people, many of them in the various stages of an obvious hangover, and a definite tough-to-put-your-finger-on strange but not entirely unpleasant vibe. I can see how the King would easily make you miss LA more than, say, the Beverly Center. I hadn’t eaten at one in two years or more, and when we drove past the one in Echo Park about a week ago I started laughing. Thus the pilgrimage yesterday. Hyperion was always my homebase King.

[...] Saturday: You will begin the day eating two burritos with coffee at Burrito King on Echo Park Blvd. From there you will journey around the corner to Burrito King, Sunset Blvd, where you will consume a third burrito. Following Burrito King Sunset, you will proceed directly to Burrito King Hyperion for your fourth, fifth and, if you can, sixth burritos. Immediately following your final burrito you will make your way behind the establishment to the Burrito King corporate offices where you will report your findings to both Losanjealous and the chain owner.
