Let’s see..methinks I wrote Hilburn off somewhere around 1976 or so. But the all time best ever example lof the LAT’s pathetic muso-drivel has to be Kristine McKenna’s lambasting of Frank Zappa in a curt, brief review of his album “Ship Arriving Too Late” by declaring (to paraphrase, don’t have time to look up the little jewel of an article that will one day be a major motion t-shirt) “after 20 some odd albums, Zappa finally has a hit (Valley Girl) and she then proclaimed that “he has a tin ear”. Doncha wish Hilburn had of taken the time to learn how to play an instrument so he could have chased his celebrity in another manner instead of writing.

“Compelling” that’s the word he is addicted to like a crack addict. He was washed up around 1988 but the Times has such a low opinion of pop culture that they just let sit there and write his tired ass kissing articles. Pathetic. Check out the Nikki Fink article in the LA Weekly so see how being so stodgey is about to cost the Times a mint.

i have to say you are spot-on with this one. the first line alone is a head-scratcher… who exactly are these “most prized touring bands with 30-year-old songs” ? … most of the artists I listen to these days aren’t even 30 years old.
