Why is Langer's there? Glad you asked. The neighborhood was briefly a Jewish neighborhood. Los Angeles' original wave of Jewish immigrants in the 1880s and 1890s settled mostly in Boyle Heights, but began moving out of the area by the 1920's, mostly moving to Westlake. After World War II, they packed up again, many of them moving to the Fairfax Avenue area, while others headed to the greener pastures of the southern San Fernando Valley. But Langer's held steady, bless 'em.

The lake in MacArthur Park is half-manmade, half-natural. It was originally a gully that flooded during the winter; the park's builders dug it out further and hooked it up to the city water supply.

Silverlake is man made.

If you want to see a cool (man made) lake in LA, check out the Hollywood Reservoir.

Unfortunately it has been closed for a long time now due to hill slides (2005 was rather wet). Let's hope it opens up this summer. It's gorgeous up there.
