Losanjealous Mailbag Graffiti Research Update
A most curious object was drawn from the Losanjealous reader mailbag this week. As follows:
This graffiti appeared on a billboard at the end of my street (Lincoln @ Ozone in SaMo) about a week ago. Is this some type of underground marketing campaign? I mean, something stupid like Scion would do? Or is it really graffiti? I looked all over the web for I.C.U., but I couldn’t find any reasonable matches. Normally, I wouldn’t care, but it’s just weird that if this is graffiti it has been up a week and not painted over, considering the visibility. It is kind’ve clever…
Reader X: We continue to research at present. We have not been able to overturn any overt product tie-ins. That said…Sony PSP has not been ruled out. More as it develops.
well kam CBS is actually another crew.
“california bomb squad”
“Cant Be Stopped”
and a very famous one at that.
YOU NO WAT PETE NOBODi GiVES A FUKK ABOUT SUM CULVER CiTY OR SAN PEDRO OK..iTZ ALL ABOUT *VHGR*…..FUKK ALL DEM HATERZ…..
I’ve seen the NBC peacock on one of the overpass pillers that cross the 10 (near the 10-405 intersection). Also on one of the walls on the 10 (closer to downtown) I see CBS painted all over. maybe marketing or maybe grafitti dudes are gettin’ bored.
I don’t mind the tagging so much but yeah, it makes my blood boil when some shitheel tags a tree.
the only way that is legit graffiti is if the tagger is some spastic 6 year old. Compare that with the rest of the stuff you see around town (and kudos to ‘NBC’ for tagging up the support columns down the MIDDLE of the 10: that must have been a little nerve wracking).
I especially love it (read: hate) when real losers ‘tag’ palm trees. morons.
WAIT a second, this isnt the billboard i see. There is ANOTHER one i go by, on Lincoln/Commonwealth. It doesn’t have the nike swooshes. Interesting
Drive by it everyday into work. Laugh everytime.
And those Nike swooshes are new within the last week so he/she might be adding to it. I am leaning towards it being a tagger/urban artist.
Very cool whatever it is.
Nicely put, Jason.
Have you seen this book on the phenomenon?–Conquest of Cool by Tom Frank–

Might be of interest. It was published in ’98–fairly prescient for its day.
Ya know what these “anti-ads,” or whatever the hell they’re called in “the business,” remind me of? They remind me of parents who try acting “hip” and “cool” in front of their children. You know, using the slang and body movements of the day. It just comes off sounding really lame and stupid, and you just roll your eyes.
San Pedro will always be “Pee-dro,” Hermosa Beach is just “Hermosa,” and Hawaiian Gardens…well, nobody gives a shit about Hawaiian Gardens.
As I told Ryan, though, I think Culver City needs to be “CuCi,” pronounced like “coochie.” More neighborhoods should be named for degrading slang terms for female anatomy.
“SaMo” is what the in crowd is calling Santa Monica now? Jesus, what’s next: SaPe? HaGa? HeBe?
Boy… I can’t decide for the life of me if this is some really hip “anti-marketing” ad, or hardcore tagging.
