FRIDAY

east 2 westEast to West @ thinkspace
An exhibit that brings together three inspiring talents who met in a small central coast town in California where they were all living and working at the time. After exhibiting together in local art shows and collaborating with one another on both paintings and sculpture, including large-scale murals about town, the three went their separate ways, but have kept in close touch with one another and with “East To West”, their experiences and influences will have a chance to feed off one another yet again. This show will focus on where they came from, where they are now, and where the future is taking them. Expect numerous collaborations and a series of installations, including a rumored invasion of Shnurfs. Opening Reception: Friday, May 12th, 2006 from 7PM until Midnight. Through 5/31.

TUESDAY

David Wilson: The Eye of the Needle @ Pasadena Museum of History
David Wilson is founder and director of The Museum of Jurassic Technology, a unique museum in Pete’s hood that chronicles the history of human curiosity and ingenuity, focusing on the restitution of decayed intelligence and examining cross- sections between art, science and natural history. The Museum, in its enduring interest in “tiny things,” features several exhibits of, or relating to, art and technology on the microscopic scale. Mr. Wilson will present a lecture on the topic of microminiature art and technology, highlighting the work of the three acknowledged masters of Microminiature Art, Nikolai Syadristy, Hagop Sandaljian and Edward Kazarian.

Minor geographic quibble: the Museum of Jurassic Technology is in Palms, not Culver City. Call it “West L.A.,” call it “Culver City Adjacent,” just don’t call it “Culver City.” Nothing in Culver City goes north of Venice Boulevard.

The museum considers itself to be in Culver, as LAist pointed out a few days ago. Are you telling me you didn’t see that raging comment debate, pete-of-the-blogcomments? Mind you, I don’t disagree with you but you will have to take it up with the source in this case.

Myself, I just call it “over in that area”…

I haven’t read LAist in months, alas. Something pissed me off one day, and I can’t even remember what. Oh well.

The museum is interested in all things tiny. This may also including street address fabrication. Blurb updated.

    Hehe.

I always considered my Palms credibility somewhat questionable because 1) I never drank at Irish Times or the now-defunct Sarna’s and 2) I never made it to the MJT. Regarding the latter, I can only get myself in the mood to see tiny, strange things after midnight (and a couple of Gastr del Sol albums, for that matter) and the MJT never happened to be open at that time.

OK, I think I’ve figured out what’s going on here:

The MJT and its neighbor the Center for Land Use Interpretation are in the City of Los Angeles. However, they in ZIP 90232, the post office for which is in downtown Culver City, and as such have Culver City mailing addresses.

The house in which I grew up was in a similar situation, where it was within the incorporated boundaries of one town but the ZIP of another. Kinda dumb.
