A few notes from le Fest du Tofu, wherein the Losanjealous SuperFoodFriends convened to form the solid mass of energy known as SuperFoodFriend-1:
- I tried to connect to the 2006 Los Angeles Tofu Festival WiFi Signal. I was 50% connected. Alas I Could Not Post.
- Following the Volunteer Booth’s advice I searched for Technical Help. The Little Tokyo Wi-Fi Booth was vacant. A sign in the Little Tokyo WiFi booth read, “Thanks for trying the scavenger hunt! See you tomorrow!”
- I halfheartedly attempted to utilize 40-odd downtown WiFi signals a la Johnny Lee Miller circa 1996.
- Numerous SuperFoodFriends had a problem writing, aka WRITING, with pen-and-ink on spiral with Pilot Precise V5 Black Ink pen.
- Shane sported a hell of a nice tie. He also sported his own favorite analogue pen, which I wholeheartedly respect.
So then. Losanjealous condones the Tofu Festival. Here are our notes:
Samosa Mel: Ok. All my dishes were more or less the same…spongey, blandish with yummy sauce. My most memorable experience was the portable restroom where a multitude of digested cuisine was on display. (Sorry, Ryan.)
Captain Tim The Receptacle Tim: Tofu Cutlet! Tofu Cutlet! Tofu Cutlet! From the Curry House, but not served at the Curry House…(scribbled drawing of angry face)!…Tofurkey sausage salad, nasty (the onions and bell peppers – best part of that dish)…Soy burrito – very good but small…the turkey tofu meatball sandwich was like soggy mushy turkey with too much sauce. Barley tea (nothing like beer but more like tea). Beer good. Gump bad. Beat up car w/myspace stickers?!? Why!? Parking four blocks away for $4 but smelled like pee! Tofu Festival: Asians Represent!
“Phil’er Up Until I’ve Had My Phil” Phil: Let’s see, I had the Tofu Tostada, the Tofurkey Sausage, the BBQ Tofu, Tofu Pate, and Fried Tofu. My favorite out of them all was the Kirin Beer.
For The Love Let’s Just Hope TofuFest Is Better Than Gilroy’s Garlic Anjie: This is not my beautiful house (brand tofu). This is not my beautiful wife. This is not a tofu pasta salad. Two chunks of bread – somewhere between sourdough and a hamburger bun – hugging lettuce and portobello mushrooms doen not sound like tofu, pasta OR salad (any one of which would negate my argument). Ok, the purveyor of soy-baked goods misheard me. I got some kind of soybread veganwich. Tasty – in an “I didn’t order this” way. I plan to get over my disappointment with a handful of tomato-herb PROTONS (dehydrated tofu munchies), lychee/soy custard and green tea wine – the most sinful way to get your antioxidants. I didn’t say tasty. Just sinful. What would Boz Skaggs do?
Jeannette: I looked for the Okinawa donuts but only found Whore Soy (photo coming soon). Some six-year-old led me to “Soul Folks Cafe” where I was able to buy fried chicken and beans for the whole table. Unfortunately the soy “tofu” jerky made me gag…and that’s sayin’ somethin’.
Intern Shane: Tofufest 2006 was a huge hit with a great turnout of tofu lovers. Some of the highlights of tofufest were the tofu curry, Whore Soy, coconut milk, and the soy shumai. Really though, I’m biased as I am lactose intolerant and have learned to love all things soy. The low point of Tofufest was undoubtedly the cup of green tea wine which was passed around the losanjealous camp. It aroused a wretch I have not felt in ages.

Tofu tostada was GREAT! Beer was great, sake was great everything else was ok.
Losanjealous Ryan: Christ, I’m boozed up™ again. Tofu is tasteless so it all tastes good. Where the hell is the tofu chili and the tofeatloaf? Don’t see either.
I went to the Tofu Festival tonight and I must say it was rather disappointing. The portions were mad small and the food was not very impressive at all. So after dropping 5 bills for parking two blocks away, another $16 for 2 admission tickets,about $20 in food tickets, and another $15 for some ridiculously lame “I Love Tofu” t-shirt my girlfriend decided she had to have I was $56 in the hole. And although Blackalicious is decent, their live show sucks much more than I remember. I won’t be returning next year. My bad for trying t do something “different”.
I’ve never been all that impressed by the food (but I’m more of a tofu traditionalist; and remember, they are supposed to be sample portions, not full meal-sized portions), but the Tofu Festival is a fundraiser for a fantastic community organization that provides outstanding and much-needed services in the Little Tokto community and even outside of that area, and you don’t have to be of Japanese ancestry to benefit from their services. So cut the event some slack. The food is not really the main thing here.
After a recent lively conversation with SuperFoodFriend-1, I must admit that I’m sorry to have missed this evenings Tofu Festivities. Despite the mixed reviews, I’m certainly intrigued. Remember to think of the kittens.
Wish I could type tonight…that should have read “Little Tokyo.”
BTW: The Tofu Festival continues on Sunday, so you haven’t missed it yet…
I had so much fun!!!! The superfoodfriends are welcome at my house anytime!
I infiltrated the tofu festival but was unable to locate the rest of my superfriends. The Thai green curry w/ tofu was great, and the tofu cutlet from curry house was acceptable. Not half bad, for a meat alternative. Kirin and hula girls made it all taste better.
Intern Shane is lactose intolerant? How did he eat those Tommy’s burgers?

Ugh. I am rocking a serious hangover today. I just ate beef, chicken and carnitas tacos (respectively) to counter the effects of soy.
I hear you, SuperFoodFriend. The SuperFoodFriend-1 Energy Mass found itself with a collective daylong soyover. I just had a massive pastrami sandwich.
Russian Roulette, eh?… This gives me an idea. We’ll need a party-sized cheese platter from the Silverlake Cheese Store and a dozen lactose intolerant captives. TSE MAO!
I countered my soyover with chicken curry (extra hot) from singapore banana leaf at the grove. did the trick.
I so should have been at this.
On the other hand, I had porterhouse last night and spare ribs tonight. My parents have a distinct appreciation of the pleasures of the flesh, that’s for sure.
Pete… why do you have to lie about not going to the tofu festival? Not only did I see you onstage performing, but someone captured it on film.

despite the sunburn i was able to enjoy one food item and it was a tofu curry dog from the curry house: two pieces of tofu, curry on a hot dog bun. it was definitely worth it for one scrip ticket. thanks for coming out and for all the support, all the LTSC staff worked very hard to put on this community event!
I have always been able to find Japan Town, when I dont need it. The reason why i know it’s Japan town is because there are always Japanese travellers in the street outside that Hotel, which I almost always run over after drinking at some crappy loft party off of San Pedro or whatever that street is nearby. On Saturday, I could not find the tofu. I could not find the haphazard street dwellers. Downtown LA is too confusing. Maybe next year.
The edamame shumai was the best soy-based food I tried. The poke was great, but the tofu at the bottom was irrelevant. And the Singha beer was good, but at $5 for an under 12 oz cup I didn’t want to overindulge.
I was looking for the Hufu booth but couldn’t find it. What gives?!!!
I went to the Tofu Festival on Sunday and depite the heat I had a great time. I tried the Tofu Tostada and it was delcious. Does any one know the recipe or how it was made?
