Give Me Santoro’s For My Desert Isle

By Samosa Mel - Thursday August 31st 2006

santoros!

I love sandwiches. If I were stranded on a desert isle, I’d want sandwich fixin’s with me. Sometimes, I fantasize about having my own little sandwich shop–but I’d be hard-pressed to make an offering more satisfying than those at Santoro’s in Burbank!

It’s just a damn fine sandwich!!

Left: TurkeyLurkey with EVERYTHING (turkey, cheese, mustard, mayo, oil, chopped onion, diced tomato, pickle and herb vinaigrette)
Right: Meatball & Cheese

this place is the real deal. the true beauty of santoro’s is that it is genuine. the owners’ original (and only other) shop is in malden, mass., where i lived for a few years as a kid. i remember the big deal it was to get santoro’s some nites (both in malden and here). boston is the land of subs–they know how to make subs, period. there is no decor in burbank. there’s no nothing. just good subs, made to order. you won’t find better, nor more genuine. if you’re in burbank and have a hankering for a sub, by all means, go to santoro’s. my dad (also from boston/malden) asked them about their bread once. there’s a secret to it. and it’s key. i can’t reveal it tho, sorry. but they told him (more or less) the secret, cuz he’s on the inside, aka a boston area transplant.

I lived in Burbank for a year in the early 80’s and would often stop by a sub shop on my way to a continuation high school I was attending at the time.

These subs were so incredible; I can remember the taste over twenty years later. I’ve tried to duplicate them and can’t seem to make it happen. I’ve made my own pickles and then diced them up with tomatoes and onions and then let them marinade. I should try adding some Italian dressing. And the sub rolls I get never have the right ‘twang.’

Can’t believe I found this listing. I had given up a long time ago. I live in Oregon now, but I’m going to have to fly down to Burbank and get one those turkey and ham combos. At least my co-workers can quit hearing the “Once, when I was a kid, there was this sub-shop in Burbank that had this relish…” stories every time they mention Subway or Quiznos.

Maybe you can go home, or at least get a taste of it?

Just got word that Santoro’s is hosting it’s 50th Year celebration on Nov 3rd. Calls are going out for the old sandwich makers to come back and get some glory, celebrate with the original owners and the new one. 50 Years!!!!! Tried and True, Loved Anew
