Maybe because it’s legendary in it’s own (perverse) right? As if John Waters had gotten into foodservice instead of film.God,I was one of those bitchy,neon haired miscreants.Yacked up an Oki dog after a Germs show once.I always loved them,though otherwise I’m a pretty healthy eater.Maybe they’re satisfying like a lot of other unwholesome lowbrow things;bad porn,heroin,gore movies,unprotected sex………………

I was an Oki “ite” some 25 years ago. The one on Santa Monica blvd. I was not a punker, but a homeless young woman at the time. Oki dogs was basically a safe haven for gay and straight street urchins such as myself. Jimmy (the owner) was very good to all of us expecting nothing from us but to clean our messes up and to not cause trouble. Because of Jimmy and Oki Dog alot of us went to sleep at night with a full belly. About 3 years ago I stopped by the Fairfax store and Jimmy was there. He recognized me instantly, I introduced him to my 19 yo daughter and her room mate. He handed me $20.00 and told me to order the three of us dinner ( Yes from Oki Dog ) It brought back alot of memories sitting there eating that Oki Dog. Some bad, but mostly good.
Who knows what would have happened to me on those streets back in the day if Jimmy and Okis wasn’t there when I had no where else to go.
I will forever be greatful.

Um…I actully LOVED these things. Moved away 15 years ago and miss them drastically. Even tried to make my own homeade version uncsuccesfully on several occasions. I’d rather have an Oki Dog than Prime Rib. No, I’m not kidding!

Some 25 years ago, there was another Oki-Dog location on Santa Monica Blvd., right across the street from Astro Burger. The local punk rockers adopted the place, and after gigs at the Starwood there would be vast hordes of leather-clad hair-dyed malcontents inadvisedly consuming Oki Dogs and free kim chee (and purchasing their methedrine from the back door). It was THE punk rock meeting place in Hollywood for several years. The management even kept a couple of tables segregated from the rest during normal business hours when the place wasn’t absolutely swarming with punk rockers, and these were known as PUNK ROCK ISLAND. When pan-handling homeless punk kids showed up during the daytime with no money to buy food, they would be given free ice water and kim chee and told “YOU NO BUY NOTHING, YOU GO PUNK ROCK ISLAND!”
