The Receptacle Follows His Heart
By - Tuesday September 19th 2006

Allman Brothers? This review takes me to the former underbelly of Canoga Park for a slight change for the receptacle.

I travel to this bastion of thrift stores and former strip bars and The PussyCat theater for a wholesome vegetarian treat. Almost like Times Square used to be, without the New York, the marquee theaters, the Times Square, or the…..well, it’s nothing like Times Square but it did used to have strip bars and a PussyCat Theater.

I must preface this with the reason why I came to eat at a *gasp* vegetarian establishment. The receptacle is going through a sort of trash can renaissance. (Read: From metal can to spiffy blue, green and black bins)… I have been eating extremely healthy after my physical mandated that I lower my cholesterol from it’s dangerous heights of higher than mid 250′s. I have since definitely lowered it, lost quite a bit of weight, and barely eaten meat (I said barely, don’t fret, tacos, burritos and burgers are not out)… Keep reading…

This restaurant came highly recommended by my musician neighbors that are children of the matured 60′s set. It is called Follow Your Heart and is a diner-come-vegetarian friendly, vegan friendly, buddhist friendly, and Native American friendly “establishment.”

Jesuchristo! Cactus #1
By - Saturday September 16th 2006

cactus #1 taqueriaMy good god. Nothing says Banksy to me like a $5 plate full of tacos. Clockwise from top: Al Pastor, Asada, Birria, Chorizo, Chicharron.

There are many things to love about Cactus #1: The tinseltown locale…the tacos, of course…the tortas…the prices…the paean to ‘unholy gore 06‘ …the close proximity to the willoughby-vine locksmith shack…the inordinate amount of tinseltown crazies that are magnetically drawn to the green-and-orange…

I just started eating there a year ago, but my personal favorite thing about Cactus #1 is the crumbling wall of historic Jeffersons [photo].

Heard Over the LA City Hall Loudspeaker This Afternoon
By - Thursday September 14th 2006

“This is the emergency services coordinator. The report of smoke has been investigated by the Fire Department. It was apparently due to a toaster incident on the first floor. It is now safe to return into the building.”

toasterFirst off, “toaster incident?” It sounds like the name of a neo-funk folk fusion band, perhaps playing on an off night at Spaceland.

Second, why would there be a PA announcement INSIDE the building that it was safe to return INTO said building? A hearty thanks from all of us up here on the top floors.

Third, City Hall has a PA system? Neat. I wonder if anyone has ever taken it over like Andy Dufresne in “Shawshank?”

Dan Evans isn’t only your favorite mid-level bureaucrat, he’s also a damn fine Los Angeles Wedding Photographer. Check out his work at www.danevans.org.

LOS ANGELES – September 7, 2006 – Off the heels of sold-out shows around the world, renowned video game composers Tommy Tallarico and Jack Wall are bringing their immersive concert celebrating video games back to the world-famous Hollywood Bowl for the second time on September 21, 2006. The new Video Games Live™ concert features music from the most popular video games performed by top orchestras and choirs, combining exclusive video footage and music arrangements, synchronized lighting, solo performers, electronic percussionists, and groundbreaking interactive segments to create an explosive one-of-a-kind entertainment experience.

Special Musical Guests to Include BT, Steve Vai, Dweezil Zappa, Video Game Pianist Martin Leung, Game Composers, and More

You don’t want to miss Steve Vai. He shreds®. But wait. There’s more.

New segments include a live performance of excerpts from the new Halo® 3 score as released this year at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, and the world premiere of Civilization IV, plus a rare special acoustic performance by the original Lucas Arts composers performing Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, and more.

If you don’t win, you can still purchase tickets. For now. I should warn you that it has been selling out. Click here to test your luck.

Apparently people like to dress up for this event. Somebody dressed as Doctor Mario last year in Vancouver. My favorite game! More info @ Videogameslive.com. . .

Top 10 Things I Learned Browsing the L.A. County Coroner Web Site
By - Wednesday September 13th 2006
    Coroner's Office Logo

  1. Its intro page animation runs for two minutes and ten seconds.
  2. In 2001 five people died from falling out of a tree.
  3. On the privacy page explaining in detail that they don’t use cookies, two cookies are set.
  4. To help off-set monetary losses, the Coroner’s Office opened a shop called Skeletons In The Closet in September 1993.
  5. Its most popular items are the Coroner Tee Shirts and the Woven Beach Towels.
  6. You can request a catalog online.
  7. The site is laced with punny taglines such as “Our Commitment Burns Bright”, “We Have Our Work Cut Out For Us”, and “Stay Cool.”
  8. A complete private autopsy will run you about five grand.
  9. The Unidentified Persons List includes photos of facially recognizable subjects.
  10. You will have nightmares after viewing the Unidentified Persons List.

Win Tickets, Tape The Black Keys for Us
By - Tuesday September 12th 2006

Black Keys

BK tixThe Black Keys have a very liberal live taping policy. This means that you can record their sure-to-be rockin’ show and then upload it to us. It’s the least you can do since you are winning Black Keys’ tickets from us, you cheapskates.

Your tickets will look like that one, over on the right.

(What are the odds some dude would photograph and post a pic of a ticket for this very show? Who says flickr is useless?)

Harry Dean Stanton Leaves His Mark
By - Tuesday September 12th 2006

Harry Dean Stanton

Although a more fitting location would be outside a bar, this mysterious concrete monument to The Man stands on a patch of sidewalk near the DGA at Sunset and Fairfax. It is uncertain whether Harry did this himself (in which case it would have been with his bare finger in dry concrete) or a minion etched the inscription, but you can rest assured that generations to come will marvel at the landmark. Who needs a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame when you’ve got this?
