Heard Over the LA City Hall Loudspeaker This Afternoon
By Dan the L.A. City Bureaucrat - Thursday September 14th 2006

“This is the emergency services coordinator. The report of smoke has been investigated by the Fire Department. It was apparently due to a toaster incident on the first floor. It is now safe to return into the building.”

toasterFirst off, “toaster incident?” It sounds like the name of a neo-funk folk fusion band, perhaps playing on an off night at Spaceland.

Second, why would there be a PA announcement INSIDE the building that it was safe to return INTO said building? A hearty thanks from all of us up here on the top floors.

Third, City Hall has a PA system? Neat. I wonder if anyone has ever taken it over like Andy Dufresne in “Shawshank?”

Top 10 Things I Learned Browsing the L.A. County Coroner Web Site
By Ron - Wednesday September 13th 2006
    Coroner's Office Logo

  1. Its intro page animation runs for two minutes and ten seconds.
  2. In 2001 five people died from falling out of a tree.
  3. On the privacy page explaining in detail that they don’t use cookies, two cookies are set.
  4. To help off-set monetary losses, the Coroner’s Office opened a shop called Skeletons In The Closet in September 1993.
  5. Its most popular items are the Coroner Tee Shirts and the Woven Beach Towels.
  6. You can request a catalog online.
  7. The site is laced with punny taglines such as “Our Commitment Burns Bright”, “We Have Our Work Cut Out For Us”, and “Stay Cool.”
  8. A complete private autopsy will run you about five grand.
  9. The Unidentified Persons List includes photos of facially recognizable subjects.
  10. You will have nightmares after viewing the Unidentified Persons List.

Win Tickets, Tape The Black Keys for Us
By Victor - Tuesday September 12th 2006

Black Keys

BK tixThe Black Keys have a very liberal live taping policy. This means that you can record their sure-to-be rockin’ show and then upload it to us. It’s the least you can do since you are winning Black Keys’ tickets from us, you cheapskates.

Your tickets will look like that one, over on the right.

(What are the odds some dude would photograph and post a pic of a ticket for this very show? Who says flickr is useless?)

Harry Dean Stanton Leaves His Mark
By Kevin Who Looks At Signs - Tuesday September 12th 2006

Harry Dean Stanton

Although a more fitting location would be outside a bar, this mysterious concrete monument to The Man stands on a patch of sidewalk near the DGA at Sunset and Fairfax. It is uncertain whether Harry did this himself (in which case it would have been with his bare finger in dry concrete) or a minion etched the inscription, but you can rest assured that generations to come will marvel at the landmark. Who needs a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame when you’ve got this?

Angeleno 7th Anniversary Event
By Will - Tuesday September 12th 2006

A shadowy PR agent from the bowels of cyberspace solicited Losanjealous to provide ‘coverage’ of Angeleno Magazine’s 7th anniversary celebration. With the promise of corporate-flavored martinis, I took the lead.

Friday night. We arrive to the fashionable Helms Bakery district of tony Culver City, if by fashionable you mean cavernous. It’s a furniture store. HD Buttercup. We’re not on the guest list in spite of numerous e-mailed reassurances. “It’s fine” says the party girl with the clipboard who gives us each a plastic drink bracelet. I am no longer favorably disposed toward this happening.

We walk, the initiated, down a hallway with posterboard Angeleno magazine covers flanking us on easels. They do a similar thing at the Church of Scientology, but no way are you getting free martinis there. We walk surprisingly far. What is this the Tom Bradley terminal? A drink kiosk! Now we’re talking. Good-looking waitstaff dressed in slim corporate T-shirts mix drinks while referring to a printed recipe. What’s it going to be, a martini, a pomartini, a white cosmotini, a frankenstini? The tip jar overflows with pre-stuffed 5s. I get a lemondropini and insert a buck.

Mac & Cheese Casefile #34889-B2: Slide Bar
By Mac and Cheese Mair - Monday September 11th 2006

Culinary Musings by Mac and Cheese MairSlide Bar
Fullerton

On the menu:
Appetizer portion of Macaroni and Cheese
Tuna Melt with Garlic Fries
Nachos with Carne Asada, no onions or salsa or cilantro
White Chocolate Crème Brule

So there is a band called Lit, they had a hit called “My Own Worst Enemy” or something like that. They opened a bar in Downtown Fullerton where the buildings look like a recreation of a small town Main Street. This bar has rock and roll and OC influence all over and even has an arcade with 80’s favorites alongside some driving games like Crazy Taxi.

Now on to the good stuff, the food. When the three of us first saw the menu I could not decide what to eat because it was hot and when it is hot I do not feel hungry. My two friends knew I wanted Macaroni and Cheese (because when do I not want Mac and Cheese?) but I would have been fine with a lemonade. At first I was hesitant because I had heard of this bar for it being a bar not for the food and I wondered if I was asking for trouble if I do order my favorite dish at a bar. I went against my initial prejudices and ordered a smaller portion of the mac and cheese.

Nitzer Ebb: Moscow to Hollywood to… Anaheim
By Victor - Sunday September 10th 2006

Nitzer Ebb in Moscow

Reformed English industrial act Nitzer Ebb are playing Avalon Hollywood this Tuesday, September 12. That’s the show for which we have tickets to give to readers. For some reason, I found it amusingly absurd to see that they also have a stop in Anaheim on this So Cal swing. Not to disparage the fine folks of Anaheim, of course. What it must do to one’s head to go from playing in a sweaty club full of rabid Muscovites (above) to the House of Blues at Downtown Disney in the span of a couple of months, I can’t imagine.

Huell Howser: The Drinking Game
By Ryan - Thursday September 07th 2006

Drink Huell Howser! With a limited number of high definition channels at my disposal (years after signing up, no less), DHD’s American Chopper and KCET’s California’s Gold are arguably the best shows I can hope to watch at any given time. As such it gives me great pleasure to share the Huell Howser Drinking Game originally introduced by Save the Sheep blog:

Every time Huell says “wwwwwooooowwwwww…” drink. Not just a “wow” but “wwwwwwwwooooowwww.” You’ll know it when you hear it.

Every time Huell says something obvious, drink. Example: “So the people of the town would bring their mail right here to this post office?”

Every time Huell addresses his cameraman, drink. Example: “Hey, look at this [Luis/Troy/Cameron].”

Breaking Losanjealous Exclusive: “Suri Cruise” Revealed to be 68-year-old Actor Brian Dennehy
By Victor - Wednesday September 06th 2006

Suri Cruise?EXCLUSIVE: Losanjealous has acquired an unretouched photo from the much discussed Anne Leibovitz photoshoot. Following the initial specultation that the depicted Cruise-Holmes baby may be a hired model, the story has now taken a bizarre twist, as it has emerged that “Suri” is played by none other than imposing, barrel chested, silver-haired actor Brian Dennehy, star of many films, including Cocoon and Teamster Boss: The Jackie Presser Story.

More details on this breaking story as we get them.

Ca ifornia Nigth Club
By Dan the L.A. City Bureaucrat - Wednesday September 06th 2006
California Night Club Seen on Ave 20 and Pasadena Ave, Losanjealous. What part of town is this, anyhow? Downtown? Highland Park? I really have no idea. It was rather busy at 8:30 a.m., and though I was tempted to start my day with a bang, I passed on by…
Of course, the real reason to go is to see the front of this bar… Though the proprietors were able to spell everything just fine on the side, the front is a tad different. That, and the fact that it’s busy when LA’s bulimics are still throwing up breakfast, makes this my vote for: SCARIEST BAR IN LA!
