Sister Sister Sister
By - Friday December 08th 2006

Brentwood TheaterJesus. I’m lost.

Where the hell is the Brentwood Theatre? (And where do they get off with the snotty British spelling of “theater” anyhow?) Allegedly at the corner of Wilshire and San Vincente, the theater is more accurately at the corner of Random Building and Raised Parking Lot in the far west corner of the Westside VA complex.

Charles Phoenix’s Slide of the Week: Christmas Tree With A View, 1970
By - Friday December 08th 2006

Christmas Tree With A View

Christmas Tree With A View, 1970

The Hollywood Freeway goes from side to side. The Union Bank building was the first skyscraper in Southern California. It was dedicated in 1966. We are high up atop one of the twin Arco Towers as they near completion. Rarely do we see a fake Christmas tree and an American flag together but here they are high on a steel beam labeled KAISER TOWER dangling from a crane fixed high above the city. The workmen protect their heads with smart red hardhats. They stand in awe of their patriotic holiday display. It is truly inspired. One of the men makes a timeless early morning fashion statement by pairing a black sweater vest with a lipstick red long sleeve shirt over white bun-huggin’ bellbottoms. Everyone knows you’re not supposed to wear white to a construction site!

Here’s to the flag and the tree flying high together, bellbottoms and YOU!
HAPPY HOLIDAZE!

Win Tickets to Peaches @ Avalon Hollywood
By - Friday December 08th 2006

Peaches

Electroclash iconoclast PEACHES hits the Hollywood Avalon next week for 2 shows, December 13 and 14. Her production is bigger than ever. She is backed on this tour by a full band, affectionately known as “The Herms.” Based on available reports and photos from the road, her outfits are hotter than ever, and, at various she will: play a fat Les Paul, ride a bicycle on stage, stage dive, dodge a giant inflatible cock and get carried out on a stretcher. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like a rock show to me.

Peaches

Contest entry is now closed. Thanks to all who entered. Winners will be notified shortly.

Some tickets are still available as of now, jump on them now if you want to see the big show.

A Curve Across The Pond: Part One
By - Friday December 08th 2006

Disclaimer: A Curve Across The Pond has nothing to do with Los Angeles, other than the fact that it is written by an Anjealeno.

London!London! Giddy London home of Thai Chicken on Fire! Have not been here in over two years and it is comforting to see so many things remaining constant. Like this miserable piss-drizzle blanketing the scent of diesel. Like this Steak-and-Guinness Pasty™ in the train station.

Like this confusion. I’m on foot. For the life of me I cannot find my hotel. I pass the University of London Union, host to tonight’s sold out Peter Bjorn Sven (and Larry) set. It is somewhat comforting to know that I will squander the cash to see them here mere weeks before they’ll likely play Spaceland or a comparable venue for less than $10.

Still on foot. Holy Hell. I’ve changed directions eighteen times and laughed at Compton, Gower and Calabasas signs. Gower! Speaking of, where’s a baconwrapped when you need one. I’m walking for a good 45 minutes in 18 different directions, looking for anything approximating my hotel. Holy Underground. I keep returning to the damn thing. I’ve tried 18 directions now. I think I just saw Jeff Chiliburger. Could I be any more lost? I set off once more.

Through the drizzle I see them ten paces up. Uggs. Only an American would be so cheeky. The American is walking with a purpose. Follow the Uggs.

I follow the Uggs.

To Be Continued…

Gonzo Now A Dodger
By - Thursday December 07th 2006

Longtime Arizona Diamondback outfielder Luis Emilio Gonzalez, or Gonzo for short, is now a Dodger. You can find the details of his deal or some quotes from some newspaper. But for now, let us welcome him to the family. Rather than focusing on any untoward questions about Gonzo’s anomalous outburst of 57 dingers and 142 RBI, propelling the DBacks towards taking the World Series in 2001, let’s focus on the positive, such as his proclivity for generous gift giving, as captured in the below photograph.

Welcome, Gonzo.

Q&A with Paramount, LA-based Band
By - Wednesday December 06th 2006

ParamountI know, I know. I know what you’re thinking at this very moment. I knew this thought of yours before you thought it. Say it with me now: Not. Another. New. Band. For the love of everything sacred, no more new bands. Why do males in their 20s insist on forming bands when we’ve had enough already. With only 12 notes and 144 chords in Western music, surely every possible combination of rhythm and melody has been explored. Furthermore, My iPod only holds 30,000 songs. What will I delete to make room for still more new music? My We Are Scientists B-sides?!

And, ordinarily, I’d be inclined to agree with you. But you see, L.A.’s PARAMOUNT is different. First of all, they’re friends of ours. Second of all, they are really very decent. And that’s just them as human beings. Thirdly, there are three of them. Oh– and the music rocks. Read on as Anthony (drummery), Nate (vocalizations and bassing), and Daniel (axemanship and also vocalizations) respond to and evade hard-hitting questions and baseless accusations.

NB: There is a giveaway at the end for those who make it all the way through this thing.

Which One Of You Stole Danzig’s Shit?
By - Tuesday December 05th 2006

danzig wiltern

Fess up, thief. I’m covered: Following Danzig’s show at the Wiltern LG last Wednesday, I have the staff of Frank and Hank’s, the staff of Cafe Moss booking club, and the staff of my apartment all vouching as to my drunken whereabouts. I could not possibly have driven off in Danzig’s truck packed to the satanic gills with stage equipment.

From Blabbermouth:

World Entertainment News Network reports that Glenn Danzig is keen to take the law into his own hands after a tour truck carrying his stage equipment was stolen on Thursday night (Nov. 30).

Danzig and his namesake band DANZIG were relaxing after a show in Los Angeles when the equipment vehicle was stolen.

As well as asking fans for information, angry Danzig is planning his revenge on the thieves.

He fumes, “I should be able to kill somebody if they fuck with me.”

A Few Concert Reviews
By - Saturday December 02nd 2006

Begpardon. I’ve been lax in my concert reviews. Following are the reviews of six concerts I’ve attended since 29 Nov 2006 (three days ago) in no particular order. Deep down, though, you and I both know this is merely a transparent excuse to foist another questionably informative HTML table onto your eyes. Behold:

Concert Reviews For Period Spanning 29 Nov – 2 Dec 2006
Artist Venue Grade Notes
Danzig The Wiltern LG A- As much as I want to, I promised [redacted] that I would not compare Danzig to Gallagher based on age and male pattern baldness. So, for the record, I am definitely not comparing Danzig to Gallagher based on age and male pattern baldness. Highlights: (1) 500 people in black sweat-steamed tshirts all scream-singing incomprehensible lyrics about devils and what-have-you (2) Preshow fortification courtesy Frank and Hank’s (3) Honey-drizzled hotok courtesy Koo’s Trailer Grill. Lowlight: $22 for two beers at ridiculous Ktown watering hole
