A Night at uWink
“NOLAN!â€
The founder of Atari and Chuck E. Cheese glances over at us, somewhat incredulously.
“Nolan, c’mere, c’mere!†We are so excited…not ten minutes earlier, we were interrogating our “runner†about Nolan Bushnell: How often is he in? Is he coming in tonight? Is he cool?
And there he is. He smiles broadly and walks over to the table. We all start stammering and gushing, I grab him and ask him if he’d kindly pose for a picture with me. He agrees, even sits with us for a while and talks about his newest venture, uWink.

uWink is a self described “Media Barâ€, the first of a grand global project. Tables are equipped with touch screen monitors for ordering up drinks, food and games. Nolan Bushnell hopes to network all the franchises once they are established, enabling the customer to play against customers on the other side of the globe.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Tokyo Police Club @ The Echo
Goddammit what is up with bands naming themselves after cities they aren’t from? Of Montreal is not from Montreal, Forward Russia is not from Russia, and Tokyo Police Club is not from Tokyo. But on a positive note this new trend could signal the end of “wolf” band names. See Tokyo Police Wolves at The Echo Sunday night.

Charles Phoenix’s Slide of the Week: Golden Pagoda Resaurant, Chinatown, 1975
This is, in no uncertain terms, my favorite pagoda in all of Los Angeles. Golden yellow paired with Chinese red and Buddha blue trim have never looked so good together! Even the Kirin sponsored Chinese lanterns match!
The Golden Pagoda Restaurant isn’t the centerpiece of Chinatown, but it certainly is the crowning touch. Except for the name, which has been changed to Hop Louie, it looks virtually the same today as it did when it opened in 1941. It’s one of the many kitsch-cultural stops on my “Disneyland†tour of downtown tour this weekend and next. Standing in front of it is like being in a dream. (No, not the kind you get after eating too much Chinese food!)
When you walk in the door off to the left is the lounge should you desire an exotic cocktail before you saunter up the staircase to the second floor where you will find the most spectacular mid-century Chinese modern dining room on earth! If Lucy and Ethyl ever went for Chinese food this is where they would go.

Losanjealous’ October 2006 Commenter of the Month: Oscar
By Ron - Thursday November 02nd 2006 |
Congratulations to our October 2006 Commenter of the Month, Oscar. Less talk, more rock–on with questions.
Are comments dying or are they just being born?
I say they come when they come. Sometimes the mad commenting skills just come with the talent within, other times people are just bored and post whatever crap they feel like posting. That’s where the magic lies.
Do you remember your very first comment on any Web site, ever? What was the comment and the website?
It was probably eBay for some Rage Against The Machine concert tickets I won and it was probably something like “Great communication. An asset to eBay. A++++ all the way!”
Of course it would be tied to a show. How often do you see live music?
I try at least once a week. I live in Eagle Rock so it’s a short drive to lots of local venues like the Echo, Spaceland, and The Fold. There’s weeks I have no hearing and dying of sleep depravation because of the constant bombardment of music! It’s always cool to pace it out once in a while.

Th’Eve In Which Didst Carve M’Self In’ta Gourd A’fore Shitting On Two Cars
‘Twere a night unlike any other, lads. All Hallows Eve, they called it. Throughout the city the sounds coo! coo! bk coooo! were replaced by screeches most unholy-vile as to send shivers up and down wee-spine of Chiliburger. With but week-and-day until time-of-the-vote arriveth didst wonder aloud to self on more than one occasion, “‘Twouldst be able to vote this go ’round?”
Coo! Bk-Coooo! A-Cooooo! Coooo – Coooo. Coo! Coo, Cooooo, coooooooooo-Coo!
Bk-Coooo! A-Cooooo! Coooo – Coooo.
Screeches unholy moans and th’what-havst-yous interrupted said thoughts as abruptly as entered (wee) head. Didst finally then settle down and manage to carve self-portrait into large-girthed gourd a’fore setting out on town proper. Not wholly unflattering at that, if I may toot mine own horn but once, twice. Coo. Witness!:
