Nothing was new or original about the Fred Rated ads. What made them great was the fact that they took it to eleven...

Evan--I googled around a bit and discovered the following about Al Greenwood: 1. He is deceased. 2. There were approximately 347 separate obits upon his demise in 2001. 3. There do not appear to be any links to his commercials, which sound good but which I do not remember.

DF - know of any links to Al Greenwood, "the Bedspread King," commercials? I know they were never as popular as some of the others in this series (because they were only on late night/early morning), but they were great

@godoggo: are you sure you're not confusing Fred Rated with Sledge Hammer? They're both awesome, of course.

@Scott: I think it's safe to say that Fred was jamming on the long tradition of "crazy" admen (including Crazy Eddie as well as lots of others) who pulled zany stunts and acted goofy to sell cars or electronics. Fred's over-the-top sendup of the genre is what made it distinctive.

Oh, please. This whole concept was a rip off of the Crazy Eddie commercials. One of them even has Fred wearing the same outfit Jerry Carroll wore in the Crazy Eddie ads: blazer and turtleneck sweater, and saying their prices are "Cra-a-a-a-a-a-a-zy." I'm sure they would be the first to admit this.
