Losanjealous Concert Picks: March 19-25

By Victor - Monday March 19th 2007

PICK OF THE WEEK

Amy WinehouseAmy Winehouse
Monday @ Roxy
Tuesday @ Spaceland

How does a 60’s retro R&B act win over the indie set? Amy Winehouse is only 5′2″ (5′7″ with beehive). But the chick’s got more pipes than Super Mario and after hearing her live you’ll think she could post up on Greg Oden.

Don’t get me wrong. I appreciated the fact that Beck did the show. It was very cool of him and these last minute events are always a blast to go to, but the band was so painfully self congratulatory, shouting out stupid things like “we are so badass,” that the show on the whole became pretty tough to bear. They had a Bez-style dancer/tambourine player on stage and a guy whose backing vocals consisted of getting carried away cooing into an echo heavy mic.

I don’t know – I thought it was a pretty killer set. Short and to the point. I think we were done by about 9:15? He played Lord Only Knows which was definitely a highlight. Most of the songs had reworked extended intros and endings that the band was still trying to refine. All the guys had a lot of energy, especially the crazy dancer guy he likes to have around. Pretty great overall.

    Paula,
You should probably enter that comment into wikipedia verbatim.
Then you should cite us as a source.

Are you sure it wasn’t Britney Spears she was rocking the bottle with and getting advice about shaving off her beehive? From one lush to the other. It would make more sense. Yes Paula, how dare she!

I’m glad we returned it back to Amy Winehouse’s big FU to LA. I’m still very bitter about the whole event. It’s to the point that I was at Bordello Wednesday night when one of her songs came on before Mike Andrews started playing and I had to pump my fist in the air in a “how dare you” manner before I felt better. All very cinematic.

anyone else surprised that peter bjorn and john are playing the fonda 2 weeks after coachella? (may 17). i just saw that this morning; not sure how long it’s been up. i thought coachella made bands sign contracts not to play LA within a few months of the festival.

They’re somewhat lenient on that. Maybe it has to do with the fact that Sunday and Saturday are sold out. Also Goldenvoice is promoting that concert along with the Manu Chao show as well so maybe it’s OK on their own terms.
