PICK OF THE WEEK

Ted Leo & The PharmacistsTed Leo and the Pharmacists

Ted and his Pharmacists roll into town for two shows. His current tour is a rock n’ roll barn burner by all accounts. Surely the generally sedate NPR airwaves have never been rocked so thoroughly as when they broadcast his entire D.C. show last month. Take your meds and see for yourself.

¡Sí, Se Puede!
By - Saturday April 07th 2007

si, se puede!

si, se puede!

4/7/07: The cauldron continues to simmer in downtown Los Angeles, if you haven’t tuned in recently. I was scrutinizing ugly buildings for Curbed LA (I’m a freelance judge; it keeps me busy nights and weekends) when I suddenly found myself in a river of red courtesy ANSWER Coalition, Latino Movement USA and an assortment of other organizations. There was a flurry of messages to take in, but the number of messages paled in comparison to the number of baconwrapped vendors in full effect. Never before have I seen such a collection in such a centralized location. Side note: There’s a pretty lively immigration discussion taking place at bLA right now if you’re the debating type. Larger photos after the jump.

Cellshots: Trees With Canes (Santa Monica)
By - Saturday April 07th 2007

trees with canesI don’t know what it is about trees with canes but they crack me the hell up every time. These guys are the elder statesmen of nature and if they had mouths you just know they’d be sporting dentures and saying shit like “Wisenheimer” “Whippersnapper” and “Back in my day we didn’t used to…” To top everything else off, they always have big knobby knees and wrinkly old bark with liver spots. Frankly, they could not resemble your grandpa more. Respect your elders! The next time you see a tree with a cane stop laughing and ask him if there are any errands you can run for him. One day you too will be old.

Betseyville@Avalon, March Something, ’07

betseyville!Hrmph. . .sorry my Starrlings. . .urk. . . [heavy breathing]. . . but your Starry. . . eeeg. . . is in the middle. . .snook. . .of doing something. . .cmub. . .tricky. . .

Finished!

. . .and they said you couldn’t deconstruct vintage Louis Vuitton handbags and sew them back together into harem-inspired culottes!

Speaking of bags, Betsey Johnson’s were the theme of the latest and greatest excuse to get jiggedy at the Avalon. (HA HA HA HA HA “jiggedy” I am a ge3ius and a cun7!) Her Starresty was hoping to bag a purse or five but that modest plan was scratched by a sitchie that she will dramatize as an exchange between a gorgeous airplane and a jealous, dykey control tower.

“Starry Knightz to Avalon Party Control, Starry Knightz to Avalon Party Control, requesting permission to come in for a fierce and unforgettable landing.”

“Negative, Starry Knightz. We have a Switchfoot show still on the runway. Audience must exit safely and non-hazardously. You will be diverted to the Jerry Lewis Townhouse along with 200 of your new best friends.”

“The Whoochfoot who??? I don’t need new best friends, I need to get drunk with my old worst friends, Keith SubUrban and Jake Thrillenhaal.”

“You have to wait.”

“But Starry’z thirsty!!!”

Dodgers Complete Key Re-signing
By - Wednesday April 04th 2007

CPK Dodgers Mango Tandoori Chicken Pizza

Signing a proven performer to a 3-year contract extention, The Los Angeles Dodgers kick off the 2007 campaign by bringing back California Pizza Kitchen (“CPK”) to continue serving up individual-sized pizzas at Dodger Stadium consessions. The partnership is particularly apropos as “CPK” was founded in Los Angeles–just three years before the Dodgers last World Series Championship in 1988. From the press release:

Baseball fans will be treated to the hugely popular CPK pizzas they have come to love and crave, but until recently, could not find during one of their favorite sporting events. Now, America’s top pastime and food favorite are available together.

The disclosed terms of the deal call for BBQ Chicken, Pepperoni and Cheese varities of “CPK” pizzas to be offered in the field, loge, reserve sections as well as outfield pavillions. Cheap seat Top Deck customers will get nothing and like it.

It was not known at press time if the scrumptious new Mango Tandoori Chicken pizza–pictured above, with grilled tandoori chicken, mango, mild onions, red peppers and Mozzarella cheese on a SPICY Golden Curry sauce, topped with fresh cilantro and a sweet mango chili sauce–will be made available at Dodger Stadium at a future date, but one can hope.

The Carina Round Conversations
By - Tuesday April 03rd 2007

Below are some of the conversations that may or may not have happened during the Carina Round show @ Hotel Cafe last Friday.

CarinaMe: Have you guys heard of Carina Round?
Girl 1: No. Who is She?
Girl 2: Ha Ha! She’s who we’re here to see. Carina is the greatest! Like, so the greatest.
Me: How greatest is she?
Girl 2: Like, I want to be reborn as Carina Round.
Me: Wow! So, you’re excited to see her tonight?
Girl 2: Um, yeah.
Me: How long have you been listening to her music?
Girl 2: Um, for, at least a year.
Girl 1: Oh, wait, I know who she is. She’s on that CD I got from [redacted] like six months ago. Hey, that’s when you heard of her too.
Girl 2: Oh, yeah.

Me: So, how do you like the show so far?
Guy 1: Oh, she’s really doing a great job up there.
Me: How would you define ‘great’?
Guy 1: Strong singing, great guitar, and she looks just fabulous.
Me: Do you have any qualms about a Brit singing on an American stage?
Guy 1: What? No, of course not.
Me: Do you have any concerns about terrorism? 15 British sailors were recently kidnapped by Iranian forces. Some are reporting chants of “Death to UK” all over Iran. Are you concerned about Iranian violence at the Hotel Café tonight?
Guy 1: I’m gonna get back to the show.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Jason Lytle & Aaron Espinoza @ Silverlake Lounge

Aaron & JasonIt is bittersweet to see the decline of Grandaddy intersect with the resurgence of Earlimart, their kindred LA-based softrockers, whose tunes from their forthcoming record sounded damn good at the Getty last month. With the two frontmen from these bands coming together for an intimate one-off gig, you can expect “broken synths, acoustic guitars, birds, little songs, crickets, drum machines, and a bottle of wine,” as they put it on the Earlimart blog.
