Losanjealous Concert Picks: May 28 – June 3

By Victor - Monday May 28th 2007

PICK OF THE WEEK

Arcade Fire & Electrelane @ The Greek
Tues | Wed | Thurs (Electrelane solo @ Troubadour)

Arcade FireSure, it’s easy and obvious to go with Arcade Fire, especially in a week loaded with contenders–Voxtrot, Brakes w/ Pela, Deerhoof, Raveonettes w/ Midnight Movies, Manu Chao, et al–but considering these are the Fire’s 1st headlining shows since the Troub in Jan. 2005 B.L. (Before Losanjealous), they get the nod. Getting to The Greek early on a weeknight is always dicey but Electrelane is worth the effort.

So why are they waiting two months to announce the headliner for the second night of Sunset Junction? Is it actually someone good for once. I’ll go Saturday just for Blonde Redhead, but I wish they would come to REAL LA to do a full show at some point in their career. Pomona is too fucking far to count.

hi guys–For those of you attending Arcade Fire tonite and had the mix up of first getting Pit Res. seats, even mailed to you, then getting the call that they are void and you need to pick up section A tickets at will-call:

For those of you in a similar situation, can you let those of us know if the pit section is general admission after all, and if so, can we use the will call tickets to get into the theatre and then use the Pit tickets we got in the mail to get into the pit? thanks, A.

@ Bort: Blonde Redhead opened for Interpol in LA couple of years ago at the Olympic Grand Auditorium.

Anyone interested in a pair of tickets to Arcade Fire show tomorrow (Wed). I’m only asking for face value. Sec. B, Row W.

Just got back from the Arcade Fire show. The pit is general admission. Thanks to whoever complained about the show not being sold out, which in turn made me check and score a pair of sweet section A tickets. Simply put it was an amazing show. You guys rock.

i also benefited from the site & was in section A row L last night. however, i was (gasp!) sort of blah about the show. it ended pretty high but i found it rather dull until they played antichrist tv blues. maybe it’s the lion’s share of the new material that i don’t like, maybe it’s the fact that nothing will ever live up to seeing them twice at the troubadour in january of ‘05, but i just felt sort of disappointed last night. i have tickets to tonight’s show in section B, row W that i won’t be using if anyone’s interested. i WILL however be at the hold steady tomorrow night. hopefully that will lift the old concert-going spirits. blah.

The tix I picked up at will call still said PITRES instead of Section A, but didn’t get me access to the pit since the ticket scanners checked with the box office. If you have legit pit tix, they’ll scan your ticket and at the same time give you a wristband.

charlie, I feel your sentiment. I saw them at The Troubadour in ‘05 and I don’t think any AF performance can live up to that. I preferred the Funeral songs during their set too.

You guys are right. The funeral tunes were much better recieved. It was my first time seeing them live and considering that I had a great time.

i don’t think all of “the neon bible” is inferior necessarily. i love ‘keep the car running’ and ‘antichrist’ and ‘intervention’ has some nice elements. i just don’t get what they’re doing with the title track or ‘cage’ at all. it’s almost sort of waits-ish but i don’t think it fits at all. plus they’ve gone from like 8 ppl on stage to about 14 which was sort of unnecessary. it’s probably still a better show than 95% of the stuff out there.

on ANOTHER complaining note, has anyone ever seen a show at the greek that maintained high energy for even an extended portion of the set? i think that may be another part of the issue here. the greek is so freaking mellow that any attempt to rock (see: the white stripes’ 4-show run last summer) sort of flails and falters. the best show i’ve seen there by far was wilco two years ago. tweedy literally said to the crowd something like “we’re just gonna lay back and play summery tunes” but less hippie-ish sounding. and that’s what they did and it was really great. this is an indoor/outdoor dynamic to an extent but i think the hollywood bowl is actually more conducive to a hot performance than the greek.

ok i have no idea when i became such a malcontent.

skim, I know Blonde Redhead opened for Interpol. That’s why I said I want a FULL show. 30-40 minutes just isn’t enough.

Has anyone heard any info about the Prince residency at the Roosevelt Hotel, other than what was mentioned in the Buzz Bands section of the Times?

    @shenny

My tickets were also PITRES. I was completely upset about it. I completely agree with all of you that the Troubadour show was so much more intimate and had much more energy than this show. I also love Funeral better than Neon Bible. Oh well, c’est la vie

Having seen The Arcade Fire six times now (troubadour, hollywood bowl, coachella sunset X2, and now both nights at the Greek) I’ve come to the conclusion nothing will ever equal the troub show, although the first coachella sunset set on the outdoor comes close. Just wish was lucky enough to see them at spaceland in dec 04. I thought night 2 of the greek dates was by far superior. approx 20 more min. w/ no encore break.

PS. Our tixs were also PITRES. but i couldnt complain we were 3rd row center and had Drew Barrymore behind us.

There was a slight break… for the band, when Win had to walk back down. :D I enjoyed last night immensely from North Terrace. It was only the 2nd time I’ve seen ‘em (1st time was their second Coachella sunset set).

Snow Patrol has Hot Hot Heat opening for them at the Santa Barbara & Greek shows. Good times. Also, Little Radio Summer Camp starts this weekend. This week, it’s The Pity Party & next weekend has The Raveonettes w/ The Little Ones!

hey not sure if anyone was at hold steady last night but they kicked ass. not quite as good as when they played the troub last fall (sorry i’m such a broken record but it’s true) but really good nonetheless. craig finn looks like he’s lost a ton of weight. also i want to steal the super-cool LCD soundsystem poster from out front of the el rey.

oh man i just got battles tickets. that’s gonna rule.

Electrelane kicked ass last night. They show had a way different vibe that the Greek shows. Electrelane really rocked the place out. I’m glad I went instead of just settling on just seeing them open for The Arcade Fire. The show sold out the day of the show and the crowd was really into it. Seen in the crowd, Karen O (YYYs) & Nathaniel (The Blood Arm). Good times.
