Theater Review: Betrayal
To begin, a small rant:
For the love of the ever living g*d, why the fuck does every damn theater in Los Angeles County insist on calling its space a theatRE?! We’re not in the UK! We don’t use cheques, the last letter of the alphabet is pronounced “zee” not “zed,” and cricket is a cousin of the locust, not a game.
I mean, really.
A can of pickled herring from the private stock of Dan the LA City Bureaucrat to the best answer to this question. Post your answer in the comments section. And no whining. My decision is final, dammit. It’s my smelly fish, and I’ll give it to whom I please.
I grew up in a part of San Diego called Rancho Penasquitos, which is Spanish for “Rancho Penasquitos.” The main shopping area, which came complete with a Jack In the Box AND a El Pollo Loco, was known as the Penasquitos Towne Centre. This irritated me, and not only due to the dearth of dining options, but because a friggin’ strip mall does not bring to mind Jolly ‘Ole England. It calls to mind Jolly ‘Ole Topeka, hardly the place I want swimming to mind when thinking upon the halcyon days of my youth.
But, anyhow…

The Science of Sake @ California Somethin’ or Other
Starry’z gonna hate herself for doing this but she’s gotta introduce you to her best friend Smooches. She works in a law firm. If she wuz a shirt it would say “49% Angel, 1000% Bitch–Don’t Push Me” She’s loud and stupid and shops at Forever 21. When she talks I want to throw up. Starry kind of hates her. But she has amazing JUGGZ!!! So Starry called her up and said “Do you want to eat sushi and wear name tagzz?” and she said “Hellz yeah!” and Starry said “Awesomezzz!”
So we had to go to the California Science Center, which Starry thought was like a hip club downtown. But it’s not. It’s a California Science Center. And we had to be there by 6 or something, and Starry’z like, What is that number you invented? “6″??? What is that? Starry doesn’t know what that izz but Smoochez drove so we were only three hours late PH3W!!!!

Win Tickets to Patrick Wolf @ Troubadour
By Victor - Thursday May 03rd 2007 |
Patrick Wolf finally makes his way back to L.A. on 5/16. Luckily for us, he gets free from supporting Amy Winohouse to do a his own headlining gig.
It’s the last night of his American tour, so, given his history of memorable performances, anything can and probably will happen. Just don’t expect the new drummer to act up, as he might be sacked right there on stage, mid-song, as the old one was in New York.
If you are the generally unlucky sort, you may as well buy tickets here. They only went on sale yesterday but word is they’re moving fast.
5 tracks from new record stream on his website, if you require an indoctrination into his sound.
Contest entry is now closed. Thanks to all who entered. Winners will be notified by 12 noon, Friday, May 11.

Spidey For Sale
By Ryan - Tuesday May 01st 2007 |
Today’s the day folks…the Indie Rock-Laden™ Spider-Man 3 Soundtrack is officially now on sale. Spidey is back, his suit is trying to eat him, and the Flaming Lips and the Walkmen are along for the ride. Likely you already knew this because you read Pitchfork and Stereogum.
“What the hell does this release date mean to the average Angeleno?” I hear you asking. Take heart, true believers. At the end of the day it means three things:
- It means great music!
- It means something to have Kirsten Dunst sign when you see her at the next el rey show smoking ciggies nonstop!
- Perhaps most importantly it means the continued proliferation of bootleg Spidey-themed toys being hawked at Venice Beach and the downtown Broadway shopping district. My favorite Fake Spidey is actually a tie between “SPADER-MAN” and “The One With Eight Arms.” (Photos TK)
For a taste, head over to myspace or just stream the entire soundtrack right here courtesy the good folks at Record Collection (QT format, 15 tracks – sorry, no bonus second Flaming Lips track this go-round). At any rate, they’ve put together a great soundtrack. Spidey yourself silly & be sure to tell them SPADER-MAN sent you.
