Anticipating The Mozzer With Baited Breath
By - Wednesday June 06th 2007

MozAre you going? Who’s going!? Headcount via comments, please! I’ve been talking this one up all week. “It’ll be flametastic!” say I to [redacted] with baited breath. “Everybody there will look like Morrissey. You can’t believe the sight. Huge pompadours. Hey there’s Morrissey! No…There He Is! Etc. The fragrant scent of CK One will hang heavy in the night air above the bowl like never before. They’ll be throwing gladiolas and slipping fond love notes to the stage, all the while Steven Morrissey will never ever give them the time of day, prancing back and forth taunting the elusive Julia.

Julia, get me out of this mess! Save me, Julia…Where are you, Julia? Oh there you are.”

Thing is I really don’t even like the new album. Sacrilige? Possibly. All due respect to Tony Visconti. Hey, The Man Who Sold The World is one of the greatest albums ever given to mankind. But this ain’t it. After “I Will See You In Far Off Places” (track one) it is frankly time to turn it off and put on something like Vauxhall or Quarry.

Sweet Jesus I can’t wait for Friday. Who’s going!? Look us up. We’ll be in section [redacted], row [redacted], seats [redacted] and [redacted].

Of note:

  • No alcohol allowed inside this Friday eve. Food baskets ok. Smuggle accordingly.
  • Photo requests denied via artist rep. Respect. And/or smuggle accordingly.

Sea Level Records

Sea Level Villanelle

When music calls to lift you from the dark
The sun shines on a place that many laud
At Sea Level in the shade of Echo Park

Brimming with suggestions for a lark
Of weekly shows, conventional and odd,
When music calls to lift you from the dark

Its emailed updates, anything but stark,
Had links and new releases to be sought
At Sea Level in the shade of Echo Park

With a selection broad as story arcs,
The kind that makes collectors awed,
When music calls to lift you from the dark

A smiling crew, with nary a grouse nor bark,
Welcome all the punks, folkies, goths, and mods,
At Sea Level in the shade of Echo Park

With this villanelle its passing we will mark
And on to new adventures goes its Todd
When music called to lift you from the dark
At Sea Level in the shade of Echo Park

Get It While It’s Not Hot: The Churro Milkshake
By - Tuesday June 05th 2007

If you think a churro is nothing without its warm, gooey center, turns out you couldn’t be more wrong. Churro purists, look away. Because if you hit the Counter before July 1 you will no doubt succumb to the sweet, chunky, cinnamon-laden brilliance of the churro milkshake. Oh yes.

the churro milkshakeThe only way this Milkshake of the Month from Santa Monica’s gourmet burger joint could be more delicious is if it had some sort of horchata component. (It employs the unambitious though sensible “vanilla” base. You could argue that they didn’t want to overdo it, but this is a restaurant that will pile fried egg, fried pickles and “horseradish cheddar” on your burger if you so desire.) Even so, it is awe-inspiring. It’s also further evidence of Los Angeles’ raging case of multiple personality disorder, bringing to mind a scene in which a smog-darkened churro truck plows through the uber-stylish garage door that takes up one wall of the Counter and explodes with bits of fried dough, giving diners something new to drink with their black forest ham-covered burger.

The only downside, and this should be obvious: Straw stoppage is considerable, so you must be coordinated enough for the spoon/straw combo. You can do it.

Black Angels & Vietnam @ Troubadour, 6/1/07
By - Tuesday June 05th 2007

VietnamIf Jesus had a band, it would be called Vietnam. If Jesus played guitar, he would have been at the Troubadour Fri. night, opening up for the Black Angels. It’s not that Vietnam played to any bible thumpers that might be in the audience Nay. Lead sing J(esus)oshua Grubb and his band of disciples fit the physical description of God’s homeboy to a “T”. It was kind of eerie. I mean, I’m Jewish and it was kind of eerie. In fact, I was so distracted by the likeness that I didn’t even internalize any of the music. I’m sure it was inspiring.

On to the Black Angels, though. They certainly know how to throw down, whether you were on ‘shrooms (see dialogue below) or you were actually from the 60′s, (as some in the audience surely were), it was hard not to appreciate the driving, pulsating rock that them Austin-based Angels manage to achieve.

Consumer Goods Review: Kirkland Tortilla Strips
By - Monday June 04th 2007

Kirkland ChipsItem: Kirkland Signature Tortilla Strips, Manufactured by Mission.

Size: 48 oz (3 lb)

Height: Roughly 3.5 4.5″ mini John Wooden figurines (pictured at lower left)

Where purchased: Costco (Van Nuys)

Price paid: $2.99 (plus 8.25% tax)

Review: These “restaurant style strips” are a solid new entrant in the retail chip category. Salted with sea salt and gluten free, this latest Costco offering merges the comforting brand recognition of Mission with the bulk size value of the Kirkland name. For less than $1 a pound, chip eaters are getting a quality chip. I tend to prefer a round chip for dipping, with a triangular chip as my second option, but this quadrilateral “strip” chip is surprisingly well suited for dipping of blended salsas and your less chunky guacamoles. The lengthier rectangular ones are particularly conducive to double- and–dare I say– triple-dipping. This commendable functionality is matched with a pleasing earthy texture and palatable taste, a hearty corn with a soupçon of lime. A slam dunk for chip lovers everywhere.

PICK OF THE WEEK

Morrissey @ Hollywood Bowl

MozOl’ Mozzer may have moved from his house in the Hills, but LA will forever be his spiritual home (and, perhaps, corporeal as well–he’s hinted at taking up his final residence at Hollywood Forever). Thus this 2nd Bowl show–15 years since the last time–is the big homecoming of the tour. Pack a vegetarian picnic basket and grab a cheap bench seat if any are left. This is one of the big events of the (pre-)summer.

Voxtrot @ the El Rey, 5/29/07
By - Saturday June 02nd 2007

Voxtrot returned to LA to play the El Rey last Tuesday with a fresh catalog of songs off their newly released album, the brilliantly named “Voxtrot”. With the excitement of their big label debut and the chance to play to a larger audience of disaffected Asian youth,
Ramesh and the gang rose to the occasion. Never a band to perform long sets, they played 50 minutes of new songs mixed with old favorites off their older EP’s. Closing the show, Ramesh took the stage armed with an acoustic guitar and played a version of “The Future”, my personal favorite off the new record. It was a solid show from the Austin natives in support of a new album that most likely will continue to grow on me until the next round of songs. Keep it coming, Voxtrot.

Unfortunately the man prevented me from taking pics stageside so I resorted to shooting video. Enjoy this full version of “Mothers, Sisters, Daughters and Wives”.

Hadrian’s Crossing Headed to Los Angeles
By - Friday June 01st 2007

Hadrian’s Crossing News comes today from the Newton Daily News that up and coming metal/progressive act Hadrian’s Crossing out of Kellogg, will be moving to Los Angeles at the end of the summer. H.C. describe themselves as:

“…a powerful mix of melody and metal. Influences include Dream Theatre, Lamb of God, Tool, Children of Bodom and Between the Buried and Me. The band is currently seeking to fill out their lineup and will be moving to Los Angeles at the end of the summer. Members include “Samuel The Quick” on guitar, “Taylor The Triumphant” on guitar, “Wilhem the Wicked” on drums, and “Jordan The Temporary” on bass.

H.C. “Jordan The Temporary’s” sobriquet is indeed accurate, as apparently he is not a permanent member of Hadrian’s Crossing and won’t be making the westward trek. Thus, the band are seeking a bass player and vocalist. Those interested should contact them via their MySpace page, which is currently streaming their demo tracks “The Killing Nightlights”, “Oedipus Rex” and “Bloodshed.”

However, before their big move to Los Angeles, H.C. will partake in the first Battle of the Bands/Jasper Jams at Aces Teen Center in Newton. Newton Daily News reports:

The event, which is sponsored by the Newton Transformation Council Connect Youth to the Vision Action Team, will pit bands against one another for cash prizes of $250 for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place.

Along with winning the $250 first place prize at Battle of the Bands, the winning band will be asked to perform at the Family Fun Festival in Maytag Park on July 2.

Los Angeles, make a mental note to look up Hadrian’s Crossing in the near future as they make their way onto our local scene.
