i thought Andrew Bird was the highlight of the night. the guy is so off his rocker, i love it. i still dislike the Decemberists. i think they flow right into the sea of musical redundancy out there right now.

I think the reason Decemberists did such a great job was precisely because the Phil augmented their music to make them sound, as you correctly point out, "bigger, more solid." Decemberists didn't do anything that different from a regular rock show. In fact, they even toned down some of their antics (i.e., no cardboard cutout of a whale during Mariner's Revenge Song).

Meloy jumped, bantered and waded out into the audience just enough to convince you that he has a personality and stayed at the mic enough to reflect the courtesy playing in front of 108 classically trained musicians demand.

And that parade of cellphones was amazing. Like thousands of fireflies hovering in place.

It was a great show, but being a bigger B&S fan, I preferred their outing with the LA Phil last year. Maybe the Scots aren't as "orchestral", but having the whole philharmonic (which seemed larger last year, or am I nuts?) just made certain songs stand out in a new way. I didn't get the same vibe that the Decemberists sounded different or better - just bigger, more solid.

Also, I felt the Meloy et alia suffered from the same problem you ascribe to Band of Horses - i.e. not a heck of a lot of banter or overwhelming stage presence. B&S were just so exuberant and played for what felt like ages, and had fun connecting with such a huge crowd (antics during Lord Anthony, Jonathan David, Your Cover's Blown, e.g.).

The 15,000 cell phones were a definite highlight, though.

But hey, it might just be my personal preference in terms of which band I like better. Both shows were spectacular, and I can hardly wait to find out who's up next July 8th, should this pattern hold.
