Don’t get me started on Jetfire, who I also owned. I remember bitterly the first and last appearance of the ersatz “Skyfire”–who crashed into the North Pole to save the Autobots from some lawsuits.

Soundwave was the best one – and the first (and only?) one I owned. That said, it never made sense when he transformed from a 50-foot robot into a handheld tape recorder in the cartoon. Everybody at my school called bullshit.

JETFIRE deserves at least an honorable mention in the Transformer mecha pantheon, as a sort of bastard son of the original crew. As we know, his 3-way Plane/Valkyrie/Gerwalk design was licensed from the molds from Takatoku’s Macross (Robotech) toy series. I remember there was intense discussion over his lineage in the 6th Grade. (Too tender age to be discussing the realities of international merchandise licensing agreements, to be sure.) He later was excised from the cartoon over monetary issues with Banzai Toys and thus replaced with the inferior Skyfire. I shudder to think what grotesque baroque mangling Bay would have done to Jetfire’s elegant lines had they retained the rights to his design. We lucked out.

People come on. Can the villain be a little creative?

On the side note, hearing shit like “AUTO BOTS ASSEMBLE” was music to the sad violins in my semi-fanboy ears.
