Hey, was it just me or was this a wildly disappointing show? The only people who seemed more bored than the folks all around me were the band themselves. Odd, because the record is so good.
Depends where you were standing. I was near the pit and definitely felt the energy of 1/4 of the floor that was moving. But I was also on the raised section off to the side (near the Cobrasnake folks) and stood near the unmovable people–the exception being the couple of people dancing in the fire lane before security told them stay behind some imaginary line. Mad props to the two girls who bulldozed the people in front of me to get to the pit!
I agree Shenny- I was in the pit (w/ the cobrasnakes) as well as side section & behind the soundboard… the youngsters down in front seemed pumped & the band was responsive. Anonymous: the further away I got from the stage, the more bored everyone looked.
The energy wasn’t the same as Coachella (hard to beat) but the performance was spot on. Next time hang with the tweenagers, they know how to party!
Oh my gawd…was that you?? I noticed a few girls looking like Cory Kennedy so wasn’t sure if that was actually her!
And yes the youngsters do know how to enjoy a show! Was so tempted to join them in the pit, but I liked my unobstructed view of the stage too much to leave.
What the fuck was wrong with the sound? It was like they were on AM radio. (Or at the Palladium!) The energy was weird. I was back by the sound board (which I’m assuming was broken, even though there were 4 asshats standing behind it, just staring) and folks were shaking their asses, at least.
We’ll always have Coachella…
The energy both on and off stage was very strange.. nme.com said they had just flown in from Europe…but the sound?? It was AWFUL! The El Rey has being going down hill in the sound department for a long time…each show gets worse. KLAXONS are so great..I’ll still see them any time any place..
@pete, how are you making the jazzmaster assumption – the pickups?
this photo shows a mustang – lefthanded – like cobain’s. even the same color (reissue?)…
I actually really enjoyed it. I was up at the front right in front of JAMES and had a wonderful time. The energy was great and the band was great and they were very very nice afterward…. Had to go to great lengths to get the set list… but I got it..
i was rather disappointed by this show actually. sure the crowd had energy, but it felt like it was just a punch of dumb teenagers being assholes. i was right in the front by the way. also the sound was rather off. fist fite were good.
It must be a serious PITA to find a left-handed Jazzmaster.
Great pics, Brian. I wish I could’ve been at the show.
Wow, can’t believe I missed the deep throating of the mic! And I wasn’t too far from that too.
Nice photos. I tried taking photos with my supercompact dig cam, but the lighting just wasn’t there for me.
i’m so sad i didn’t get to go to this show :(

P.S. I think I was one of the people who was bulldozed in front of you…by Cory Kennedy. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

I’m on the slightly disappointed team.

Forget having Coachella. We will always have the Ex-plex show before Coachella. Now that was a fun night.

Agree with above. Band was pressing, sound was off. Would have been better at Troubadour. Now. How about that opener?
I’ve been wondering the same thing about the sound at the El Rey. It has been so hit and miss lately.

I was up front for the whole show, and there was definitely a ton of energy. I had a great time, thanks for the tickets, Losanjealous!

“Great lengths”?
“Great lengths”? Don’t make us speculate. . .
Ryan: yeah, it looks like a Jazzmaster from the pickups. Of course, given the angle, it could be any old weird Fender solidbody.
