FRIDAY

Do Do Love @ Open Fist Theater

The critically acclaimed “Do Do Love “ – a dramatic comedy that the Times calls “a surprisingly sweet testament to the redemptive qualities of love.” It “revolves around Diana, a reclusive 30-something living alone on disability. Diana’s life is made up of her off-the-wall Dutch landlord, a sexy handyman, and her horny sister who leaves her husband and comes to stay with her. An appearance is also made by Diana’s childhood crush, Steve Perry of the rock group Journey, who comes to croon her and save her. Through humor, Richardson’s play addresses the universal struggle to get unstuck from the past and do love.” Closing Night of a held-over run. 6209 Santa Monica Blvd. 8 pm.

Ye Aulde Weekly Cell Photo Of Dubious Quality: ‘COKE’
By Ryan - Friday August 31st 2007

COKEAs a non-subtle reminder Losanjealous constantly mines, sorts and processes the cruddiest cell phone photos ever taken, weekly, for your cheap enjoyment. Friday, the week’s most egregious is bestowed the honor CRAPTASTIC CELL PHONE PHOTO OF THE WEEK.

This week’s winner was chosen based on sheer ambiguity. I have no information regarding the photo; simply a wonderfully cruddy photo. Was it taken locally? Was it in reference to Lohan? Was it taken by Charlie Sheen? Was it taken in reference to Charlie Sheen? Does it in fact have nothing to do with Charlie Sheen whatsoever? Does the tagger hate Pepsi? These questions and more: they plague me, albeit mildly so. Have a great weekend in NorCal at the Bigfoot Jamoboree. _Ryan

Have a craptastic cell phone photo to share?
We’re Accepting Submissions! Your cutoff for submitting that stellar capture of the ballsy San Vicente jaywalker, the rare capture of Rutger Hauer at Hauer&Sons Automotive and the proprietor of the snack bar inside the Troubadour is midnight, Thursday.

Send Us Your Pre-Labor Day Crap
By Ryan - Thursday August 30th 2007

Kat crapAs a non-subtle reminder Losanjealous constantly mines, sorts and processes the cruddiest cell phone photos ever taken, weekly, for your cheap enjoyment. Friday, the week’s most egregious is bestowed the honor CRAPTASTIC CELL PHONE PHOTO OF THE WEEK.

A blurry, barely-discernable relic from an older, better time: R.I.P. Mighty Tomkat Theatre, sleaze purveyor of Santa Monica Boulevard. It’s a phone photo, to be sure…but is it craptastic? Run the diagnostic…

  • Out of focus – check
  • Grainy – check
  • Low resolution – check
  • Something potentially important unintentionally cropped by the photographer – check

No two ways about it, it’s complete shit. Send us more, won’t you?

Your weekly cutoff for submitting that stellar capture of the toilet at the Los Angeles Zoo, the rare capture of Brian Atene in the produce section of Koreatown Jons, that alcohol-infused, one-of-a-kind oki-dog digi-postcard texted at 2am to the folks back home is midnight, tonight.

Send your photo to craptastic@losanjealous.com for consideration. Include date, time, and model of phone (if applicable).

Felt Guitars in Bob Baker: This is Your Life!

1970s vintage dancing felt guitars playing themselves take center stage at a puppet show extravaganza this labor day weekend at the “Fantasyland” of Downtown Los Angeles, The Bob Baker Marionette Theater – a landmark since 1961. Metallic Martians from outer space, glow-in-the-dark dancing skeletons and fez wearing monkeys along with dozens of other vintage handmade Bob Baker puppets appear in a wide variety of amazing musical/comedy acts from every decade since the 1930s.

I will host the colorful tribute to the world’s greatest puppeteer and puppet show extravaganza and tell the story of Bob’s life and 75+ year career as a puppet showman with a short film and vintage slide show. Cake and ice cream reception will follow the final act – a performance by the master himself!

Here’s to Bob Baker, his amazing Marionettes and YOU!!

Canadian Coffee Break: Let Us Now Break For Labour
By Canadian Coffee Break - Thursday August 30th 2007

cofadianThe Canadian Coffee Break brings together some of the finest Canadian minds in Southern California every week for a topical, lively round-tablesque discussion over very dark coffee. Won’t you join us.

This week’s topic: Labour Day! What are you best/worst memories of Labour day in Canada? What are your thoughts, if any, regarding the by-and-large Grover Cleveland Communist-Fear-Instigated Federal Holiday in the United States of America? Weekend getaways…Hot weather…Knights of Labour racist origins…Jerry Lewis telethons…Sales at Bed, Bath, Beyond, Guitar Center & Leeds Mattress…Drink specials @ the Red Lobster, Hawthorne Blvd, Torrance…

Sarah (website)
Did you know that Labour Day started in Canada because workers were protesting for a 54 hour work week (in 1872)–can you believe that? You should, it’s on Wikipedia. Back then, the world was a different place… or to quote a line every Canadian is familiar with, “This is going to make your world a lot different than the one I grew up in.” Thanks to these feisty unionists, Canadian society changed immensely… let’s take a look at what it was like less than 20 years later…

Guitar Center Coming to the Westside
By Victor - Tuesday August 28th 2007

Guitar Center

Construction notices are up in the vacant storefront at the NE corner of Pico/WW Blvds, telegraphing an impending retail launch. The space—if I recall correctly, originally a Good Guys A/V joint and then, briefly, just before its current dusty state, a hasty incarnation of Comp USA— is being primed for the opening of a new Guitar Center location. It will be interesting to watch how this store takes root in the area and what, if any, effect it will have on nearby music shops.

Chavez Ridge: The Front Eight
By Ryan - Monday August 27th 2007

Chavez Ridge - Hole 1
Little known fact: I am an athlete. I not only practice ath, I am in fact quite adept at it. Much as high school mathletes are reknown nationwide for their skills at math, so am I reknown for my prowess at ath. I practice ath here. I practice ath there. I practice ath everywhere. I would practice ath with a goat and I would: I would practice ath on a boat. To be sure, I am an athlete in every sense of the word. Saturday prior I found myself three cocktails into yet another athletic endeavour: the dreaded front eight at Chavez Ridge. Join our group as we relive the moment today, won’t you.

Chavez Ridge – Elysian Park
Course Established: 2006
Description: Eucalyptus covered ridge and hillsides with steep dropoffs and spectacular views of Dodger Stadium and downtown skyline. Climb uphill trail and cross ridge road to 9th tee on opposite hillside.

Remember this part because it will be important:

steep dropoffs

11am:Five athletes assemble in the parking lot. I polish off a burrito de pastor and belch mightily. Our guide this morning sports a mischievous grin behind a robust beard, twinkling eyes and two thermoses of bloody mary. He shakes one and takes a hefty swig. Let’s do this.

By Ryan - Friday August 24th 2007

As a non-subtle reminder Losanjealous constantly mines, sorts and processes the cruddiest cell phone photos ever taken, weekly, for your cheap enjoyment. Friday, the week’s most egregious is bestowed the honor CRAPTASTIC CELL PHONE PHOTO OF THE WEEK.

Big week; lots of entries. You collectively blew up the inbox. Regrettably we cannot publish every photo that we receive (too many fucking photos), but I’ve singled out six of the best.

craptastic!

1) Self-described “WHITE AFRO MAN” spotted at Lincoln near Broadway in santa monica. He growls “Hey C’mere. I’m White Afro Man, c’mere, let me go get my boss…to take a picture of the both of us…” which I respectfully decline. “No thanks man just you”

After the jump: The Ghostbusters Car! House of Pies Gets a “C” Rating! Baconwrapped Hot Dogs! And So Much More! CELL PHONE PHOTOS YOU ARE GUARANTEED TO REALLY LOVE, OR BE AMBIVALENT ABOUT, OR BE DISGUSTED WITH THE TIME YOU WASTED BY VIEWING, AFTER THE JUMP! THOSE ARE GOOD ODDS ANY WAY YOU SLICE IT . . .

By Victor - Thursday August 23rd 2007

losanjealous benevolent societyThe Losanjealous Benevolent Society assembles a weekly list of happenings and events in LA. If you are putting on or know of an event you would like us to include, leave the info below or e-mail it to tips@losanjealous.com.

FRIDAY

Sexopolis Hollywood @ Henry Fonda Theater

From the creators of Bondage Ball comes this “Massive Erotic Themed Pajama Party”/”Kink-O-Rama.” Hosted by Ron Jeremy and Seymore Butts. Special guest hosts Sunny Lane, Joanna Angel, Ava Rose and, Ron’s favorite, Courtney Cummz, among many other whores. Features a porn star talent search for all you aspiring porn stars and a “Best & Sexiest Pajama Contest.” Something tells me there wil be some overlap between “sexy” and “best” pajamas. $20 pre-sale.

Latin American Cinema: A Weekend Celebration @ LACMA

Some of the jewels of Latin American cinema—an industry stretching back to the silent era that has produced thousands of commercial and art-house films and a galaxy of stars virtually unknown outside the Spanish-speaking world—will be celebrated at LACMA on the occasion of the exhibition The Arts in Latin America, 1492–1820. Guest appearances by two distinguished filmmakers who will discuss their films onstage and engage in a Q&A with the audience: actor Gerardo Taracena (The Violin) and director Fina Torres (Oriana). The Violin, 7 pm; Memories of Underdevelopment, 9:30 pm.

SATURDAY

To The Masses Curated by Giant Robot @ Scion Space

Artists from the U.S. include Caroline Hwang, Ben Woodward, feric, Dan-ah Kim, and Brian Ralph; from Japan: Eishi Takaoka and Kohei Yamashita; from Spain: Olaf Ladousse; from England: French (yes, that’s his name). Together this diverse group of artists delves into different mediums (including silk screen printing, carved wood, simple pen-and-ink drawings) and styles. Not afraid to do the traditionally non-artist “thing” of blending art with products, many of the artists are known across different mediums and by a huge cross-section of people, giving them a wide reach and appealing “to the masses.” This art exhibition will feature their fine art which, for most of these artists, is their primary focus. Opening Reception, 7-10pm. Free Valet Parking. 3521 Helms Avenue, Culver City. Through Sept. 8.

Get Ten Morrissey Shows for the Price of Nine!
By Victor - Thursday August 23rd 2007

Mozzer

When Morrissey tickets go on sale this Monday at 10 a.m., the most ardent of fans will be happy to find that a “season ticket” of sorts will be available. For these dedicated planning to attend all ten (10) shows–which are being billed as the “last shows Morrissey will do for the foreseeable future”–a special discounted rate for the will be available for the full run of the Palladium engagement. The savings effectively makes one of the shows free. Along with the savings, season ticket holders will get VIP early entrance–which, given the Palladium’s Guantanamo-esque entry procedures, may be worth it alone–and a commerative poster.

One other interesting tidbit from the press release is that Morrissey claims to have turned down $75 million to reform The Smiths for a full tour, even minus the original rhythm section.

At this point of any Morrissey article, it is customary to conclude with a Smiths/Morrissey song title, whose wording takes on an ironic connotation given the context of the preceding.

Canadian Coffee Break: The Street Fair Season
By Canadian Coffee Break - Thursday August 23rd 2007

cofadianThe Canadian Coffee Break brings together some of the finest Canadian minds in Southern California every week for a topical, lively round-tablesque discussion over very dark coffee. Won’t you join us.

This week’s topic: From Tofu to Sunset Junction, The Street Fair Season is officially upon us. How do Canadian festivals compare to those in Los Angeles? Topics to ponder…

  • Live bands
  • Sausages-on-sticks; grilled corn
  • Greasy, rachety, dangerous-looking carnival rides
  • Booze
  • Entry fees
  • Festival goers
  • Parking situations

tinysunsetjunctionMarc
Montreal, where I lived for a decade, is known as the land of festivals. During the summer, a mix of inebriated tourists and locals turn the island’s streets into a city-wide Lionel Richie fantasy. It’s not unusual to find the streets packed to capacity at 3 in the morning, with clubs going in some cases until noon the next day. People seem to have nothing but good things to say about Montreal. This civic culture of celebration, no doubt contributes to the city’s reputation. Los Angeles, by comparison is infamous for terrible reputation (not that anyone here really gives a crap). This I think, is due in no small part to L.A.’s perceived lack of a public life. Having lived here several years now, I can see how one might see this city as being somehow insular, but I’d counter that there’s no shortage of public events. For every Sunset Junction, for example, there’s a year’s worth of monthly Midnight Ridazz, (which I’d argue qualifies as a kind of moving street fair). The trick in L.A. is managing to keep abreast of all the public revelry the city has to offer, which is one good reason for Losanjealous to bring back the monthly Benevolent Society event listings.

Ask A Vegetarian About Oki-Dog
By Ryan - Wednesday August 22nd 2007

Oki-Dog is beautiful in my eyes

Hello, vegetarian.

Hello.

Was this your first time to Oki-Dog?

Yes.

What did you order and why?

The vegetarian burrito, because I didn’t see the grilled cheese until it was too late.

What was the veggie burrito comprised of?

Iceberg lettuce, chopped tomatoes, onions, sliced dill pickles and shredded cheese wrapped in a giant white flour tortilla by a toothless man. He offered to put chili in it for me. I declined.

How was the veggie burrito?
