1990s @ Troubadour, 8/07/07

Bands like 1990s are what make the 2000′s such a great time to be a music fan. There seems to be no shortage of fun time groups in today’s bullish indie scene. Although absent from the US festivals this year (it’s a great time for festival fans as well) the Scottish trio chose to grace us with a mini bi-coastal tour. They played a headlining show at the Echo on Sunday and played a supporting slot for tonight’s show at the Troubadour. Debut album Cookies has swaggering rockers like “Cult Status” and “You’re Supposed to Be My Friend” that got the crowd going. Members of local band The Blood Arm rocked out as hard as anyone in the crowd. Other songs like the meandering narrative “Arcade Precinct” make for a perfect summer driving tune. The standout on the album, and at tonight’s performance, is the delightful “See You at The Lights” which owes its sounds more to the 70′s than the 90′s. If the album comes across quite accomplished for a debut it’s because lead singer Jackie McKeown and bassist Jamie McMorrow were also founding members of The Yummy Fur. (Who?) You know, that little band from the 90′s.

1990s will be back to play the Troubadour on October 27th to kick off the US release of their album.
