does anyone know set times for spoon tonight? on a broader note, why do venues not post set times on their website? i think the troub does but i mean jesus, it would be so easy and such a major convenience for concertgoers. are they really hoping that we’ll all show up right when the doors open in fear of missing the beginning of the set and by doing so increase their revenue from alcohol sales? i can’t even get anyone on the phone at the fonda. goddammit.

  2. shenny : 9/10/07 at 1:46 pm

Some venues like the Fonda post them on the ticket windows on the night of the show, but yeah it’d be nice to know..

Some interesting stuff from the Wiltern feed:
Travis with Maximo Park @ The Wiltern, Nov 21
Martha Wainwright added to the The Swell Season @ the Wiltern, Nov 10

  3. Tommie Moonshine : 9/10/07 at 2:29 pm

Hot Hot Heat (seems they play a show in LA every week) are playing cinespace tuesdays.

  4. Jenn : 9/10/07 at 2:50 pm

even their posted set times aren’t accurate. the frames took stage after their listed 10:15 time last week. it’s common practice that the show time listed (9pm) is for the opening act, isn’t it? so give them half an hour to perform and half an hour set-up in between… headliners will always be after 10pm.

  5. Renee : 9/10/07 at 4:43 pm

Just wanted to add to Shenny’s posting for Travis/Maximo Park at the Wiltern- ticket sales for that are on the 15th. (

  6. charlie : 9/10/07 at 5:18 pm

ok since i know you’re all curious, i finally got through to “jody” at the fonda after enduring the escher-like maze of their stupid phone system and basically trying random extensions for a few minutes. jody not only didn’t have set times, but didn’t know how many bands were playing (!!!). fortunately she deigned to put me on hold only to pick up a minute later with the extremely helpful monosyllabic statement: “two.”

    me: so, two bands then?
    jody: yes
me: and would you happen to have those set times?
jody: well, the tickets say the show starts at 9, so, i don’t know, maybe 10.
me: do you ever have set times?
    jody: no

look, i know we all can kind of guesstimate when the headliner might be on, but i still debate whether it’s such an inconvience for other venues to follow the troubadour’s lead and just post the fucking things. depending on how highly the promoter/headliner/venue values the opening band, the opening band’s set can really run anywhere from 30-60 minutes. if you have two or three openers, it complicates matters. posting a conservative, rough schedule would save a lot of people (most importantly myself) a lot of time and annoyance.

so i think tonight i’m going to deliberately miss the urinal and maybe grind some chewing gum into the carpet somewhere to have my revenge on jody. also i’m going to find somewhere to smoke cigarettes inside. then we’ll see who has set times! not so snarky now, are you jody? huh? muhahahahahaha!

  7. Jeff : 9/10/07 at 6:26 pm

Neil Young Tues. 11/30 at the Nokia Theater. tix are $75 - $257?

  8. Jenn : 9/10/07 at 7:03 pm

I dunno if that’ll help in your quest for the venues to post set times, charlie, but I agree with the sentiment. If all of the venues in Los Angeles followed the way the Troubadour ran their establishment… we’d probably take it all for granted. Long live the Troubadour!

  9. Anonymous : 9/10/07 at 8:04 pm

Actually, Jeff, I’ve heard it’s October 30th for Neil, not November. Sadly, however, the ticket prices you’ve quoted are dead-on.

  10. joolz : 9/10/07 at 9:28 pm

Charlie, I absolutely agree (Jody and me go waaay back) but have you ever flown Southwest? How many drinks waiting for the “15-minute delay”? = extra $7-14 per on suds at the Fonda so you don’t wait for music with your hands unoccupied. If you’re like me.

  11. anonymousey : 9/11/07 at 12:21 am

fyi, mocean worker is at the temple bar on thurs 9/13. new cd, “cinco de mowo” is pretty great.

  12. charlie : 9/11/07 at 10:51 am

k so spoon was a little bit whatevs last night in my opinion. it was my first time seeing them. also they had the fucking roof bar closed off unless you got a wristband. i’m not sure who died and made wired magazine the king of the fonda but it was sort of retarded. fortuitously i was in the company of a comely, conniving female who managed to trick some unsuspecting wired employees into thinking that we were, i don’t know, celebs or something? (”we never wait in line here and we always get wristbands. i need two of them right now.” yes, this actually worked.)

so but the show. so little variation from album versions of songs; nobody but britt has ANY stage presence. they looked nervous. also they would speed up a lot of the songs mid-song in a way that did not sound intentional at all.

i’ll be back there next wednesday finding something else to complain about while watching the pornos. is neko gonna be there? if not that’s a good place for me to start.

    love,

    c

Last night @ the Music Box seemed to be a different type of concert — aw hell, it had Wired Magazine’s NextFest people filling up the lobby with their cool gadgets (which a geek like me quite enjoyed) to promote the event this weekend. I think a sizable chunk of the crowd were there mostly for NextFest (like the ones in the back and sitting up on mezz) — and the crowd affects the performers on stage IMHO, so Dr. Octagon did pretty well considering. I think tonight or tomorrow night might be better.

If The White Stripes cite “medical reasons” and cancel their show at the Forum, like they have for their Austin shows, I may check out The New Pornographers as well.

  14. Oren : 9/11/07 at 5:04 pm

    Charlie & Jenn,

You missed your assignment. The set times were….?

  15. Bagal : 9/11/07 at 5:28 pm

Does anyone know who the special guests are playing at Spaceland on 9/25 & 9/27?

  16. Anonymous : 9/11/07 at 8:08 pm

Really, Jack and Meg? Really? I didn’t buy those great, cheap presale Arcade Fire seats because I had to shuffle the New Pornographers to Thursday because you were playing on Wednesday, and now you cancel? Now? Eight days before? Come on, guys!

  17. Jenn : 9/12/07 at 7:30 am

Oren: Dr. Octagon started at around 9pm, Spoon took the stage at 10:10pm.

  18. ben : 9/12/07 at 12:01 pm

does anyone know the password for the “buy 4 or more” ticketmaster promotion for the bright eyes @ hollywood bowl show?

    it’s…uhh…for a friend. thanks.

  19. Noah : 9/12/07 at 3:19 pm

    Friends!

Noah here from the Bowl once again. Just wanted to let you all know there are some good seats left for Rufus singing JUDY GARLAND on Sep 23! More info here lovers: http://hollywoodbowl.com/tix/performance_detail.cfm?id=3283

  20. Bort : 9/12/07 at 3:20 pm

    November 12 - Feist @ Gibson Amphitheater

Yes. Gibson Amphitheater. Damn, I didn’t know she was that big. I was hoping she’d come back to LA since I couldn’t get tickets for the Wiltern show and she was inexplicably absent from Coachella yet again, but wow. I want to see her, but at an expensive, 7000 seat venue in the middle of a tourist trap? That place needs screens really badly, too.

  21. James : 9/12/07 at 3:49 pm

bright eyes password is Golden @ the bowl.

Does anyone know who the special guests are playing at Spaceland on 9/25 & 9/27?
