Devendra @ Orpheum, 10/13/07
Devendra Banhart and the “Spiritual Bonerz” played the Orpheum in Los Angeles Saturday. The show started out being very reserved and began to loosen up once Gael Garcia Bernal was introduced on stage to sing backing vocal on “Quedate Luna” He walked off stage and sat in the audience, near Fabrizio Moretti and Nick Valensi.
Midway through the set Devendra informed everyone that they could do whatever they wanted, like stand up (from their seats), walk around, come up front, and get on stage. Within seconds fans flooded the stage prompting security to halt the performance for about twenty minutes until things could be straightened out. Eventually the fans got off but continued to crowd the front areas. The whole place was illuminated and absolutely wild for Devendra. He sometimes yelled at the security guards to “get the fuck out of the way” because they were blocking him. Songs from Devendra’s latest, Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon, were primarily played. The show was incredibly laid back and monumental!

The show was electric and the crowd definitely felt the warmth emanating from Devendra’s skinny frame.
Devendra and Gael in one night? That’s why I love LA.
As someone who officially Doesn’t Get Devendra Banhart, I can think of few endings more appropriate than for him to be trampled by a mass of crazed fans.
It didn’t look like the security guards were enjoying too much of anything. They were too busy looking stern and cockblocking DB from his adoring masses (myself included!)
And I’m sure they highly enjoying smelling you and all the other unshowered pseudo-hippies as they tried to do their low-paying but extremely important job and keep you safe.
I highly enjoyed shouting ASS-HOLE!!!!!!!! at the many angry security guards standing on stage.
