Setting aside the fact that I am 24 and have never thought myself especially cool, there are several factors at play here:

1. I grew up in a town that borders both Joliet and Elwood. The Blues Brothers is one of my two or three favorite movies of all time.
2. I already bear a passing resemblance to Belushi and would even more so if I gained, oh, 30 pounds.

Most importantly,
3. It's an easy costume. I had everything except the fedora, which I'd been meaning to buy anyway since a man ought to have a nice hat. (Due respects paid to My Baby Jo in Palms, who hooked me up with a reasonably-priced black model made right here in Los Angeles.)

An easy costume is essential because Halloween is a bullshit holiday. Highly abstract costumes intended to be witty, like yours, fail more often than they succeed. Halloween is a stupid, lowbrow event; more people should embrace this.

a blues brother. how original. sounds like something a 40 year old who still thinks he's cool would have worn.

Sorry, but your costume sounds like something an overearnest college sophomore would have invented.

I was Joliet Jake Blues, on a mission from Gahd.

Lame...perhaps. One can only imagine how fucking impressively cool Pete's costume was. How exactly does one dress up as a douchebag?

Alternately, maybe it's that your costume didn't go over well because it was...pretty fucking lame.

my costume went down like a lead blimp. a navy suit, a red tie, an american flag lapel pin and hands covered in (fake) blood. no it apparently wasn't offensive (as i'd hoped it might be), it was simply unrecognizable. the closest anyone got to recognition was: "are you a politician?" the theme of the party was "monster's ball" and i felt i was worst monster of all...to the question, i responded: "worse, much worse...a neo-conservative." she looked at me blankly and finally hit back with "what's a neo-conservative?"

i love the USA, but how is it a college educated girl at a (so i was told) exclusive, private party doesn't know a damn thing about a damned thing?
