Reader Picks: Your Favorite Concert, 2007

By - Friday December 14th 2007

Losanjealous Reader Picks: 2007 EditionIf you read this site regularly, you know by now that we do things a little differently around here. So in lieu of lambasting you with a bunch of top 10 best-of editorial lists you probably don’t want to read any more than we want to write, we’re throwing the ball into your court as the year draws to a close – this is after all a community, like it or not – and we want to find out what you we collectively dug in 2007. Let’s begin with a natural topic: concerts.

UPDATE, 1/02/08:
Polls closed; results now online.

Don’t see your fave on the list? Add a concert to the list using ‘Add An Answer’ if it’s not already there, so others can vote on your choice. Elaborate on your choices in the comments when necessary, and lobby others for their votes.

Refresh by clicking ‘VOTE AGAIN’ and vote as many times as you like; if you go to that much trouble to champion your cause, chances are good you mean what you say. We won’t tell a soul you’re stuffing the ballot box.

I’ve started things by putting two of my own favorites on the list: LCD Soundsystem at the El Rey and the Flaming Lips poolside at the Palms Casino in Vegas – for me, both transcended the norm.

If this format works, you’ll soon be asked for more picks from various contributors in the weeks to come. At the end of it, we’ll have a comprehensive collection entitled Losanjealous Reader Picks: 2007 Edition suitable for binding in fine Berkshire leather.

NB: Reader picks are centered around but not limited to Los Angeles per se. Manila readers feel free to add your favorite gigs at Hobbit House for this entry.

What now?

Patrick Wolf at the Troubadour. Earnest and enthusiastic, Patrick Wolf puts on a show that convinces the audience of the truth behind his stark, revealing lyrics.

I put up 4 choices off the top of my head (Daft Punk, Mars Volta, Justice, and Foo Fighters). Others will prob come later as my memory kicks in. But, absolutely no show compares to the experience known as the Daft Punk Pyramid show. Robots > Any Human.

    The Black Lips!!!!!

First show in a lonnnng time where I have seen dudes climbing the “ladders” at the corner of the stage and jumping off into the crowd. Oh my. Rockin’!

Arcade Fire/LCD Soundsystem. Yeah, the Bowl is a shitty place to see a rock concert, but man, what a bill. I danced my legs down to the knees.

Eh, Wilco played the greek this year, not the bowl – but we’ll keep it in the list as a valid choice BECAUSE WE LOVE YOU. Potential voters note: wilco @ greek.

seems someones got a hard on for the muse. are they a great live band? yes. but can radhiohead light in the shithole like the forum be considered “best show of the year”? hell no. muse like 5 yrs ago at the Mayan and Wiltern now those were some shows.

  7. [...] What was the best concert of 2007? [...]

  8. Posted by Chris 12/15/07 at 4:20 pm #

Radiohead Light? As if. Muse sounds nothing like Radiohead. That’s just a cheap joke from a lazy mind. Come up with something new.

The forum show was practically the best show they’ve played (besides Wembley) this year. The energy of that gig was crazy.

And from what I’ve experienced, the forum isn’t a shit hole.

  9. Posted by Julian 12/16/07 at 3:57 pm #

    why dont people respect ween
they rocked the shit out of the wiltern

I wasnt even there. but how could the sex pistols at the roxy not be on the list? ok i just added it for punks sake.

  15. Posted by Sonictim 12/18/07 at 3:58 pm #

Obviously anyone who isn’t voting for Daft Punk at the Sports Arena didn’t go. Also, it was the only venue they did the around the world lights around the entire stadium. I think it may have been their best show of the entire tour.

“Muse at Street Scene” appears FOUR times on the ballot list. Please remove three of them.

  18. Posted by Ryan 12/19/07 at 10:34 am #

@gocanux: I may be speaking outside of school here but we are actually in the process of creating an additional poll in order to gauge the community’s favorite “Muse at Street Scene” choice of the four choices in this list, possibles including “the one closest to the top” “the one second from the bottom” and so forth.

In the interim not to worry, those will eventually be consolidated into one choice and their votes combined. Vote for your favorite of the four.

How can a concert from a band that performed like 10X in socal this year to support their weakest album to date w/ a crowd full of kroq listeners compare to the spectacle and rarity of a full daft punk show is beyond me. ROBOTS FOREVER!

  20. Posted by gocanux 12/19/07 at 12:14 pm #

Robots forever—as in Supermassive Black Hole concert visuals? Oh yes!

Actually, far and away the best gig (well, gigs, as there were 2) would have to be Muse at Wembley. The lights around the Sports Arena can’t compare to giant balloons with spinning acrobats suspended above sold-out crowds of 75,000—-with epic performances by the band that has won Best Live Band several years in a row in the European awards…

Hard to top that one—I was there, both shows, I can attest to the legendary nature of those gigs!

  21. Posted by karen uh oh 12/19/07 at 12:26 pm #

Remember Muse, the old Muse, before KROQ played them?

    Ah, yeah, didn’t think so.

  22. Posted by gocanux 12/19/07 at 2:35 pm #

KROQ? Who listens to radio anyway! And I’m in Seattle….

I am very surprised that Rage at Vegoose isn’t on the list.

  23. Posted by gocanux 12/19/07 at 2:39 pm #

Karen, your comment is well taken, the audiences at Muse gigs lately are full of Starlighters (my term, but it has caught on!) who don’t know Citizen Erased from Showbiz. But, they’re learning—seeing NewBorn and Plug in Baby live has gotten a lot of them to seek out the “older” CD’s (though Showbiz and OOS were only released in the US in late ’05, well after Absolution).

BTW I have been a fan since mid’04; as soon as I heard Absolution, I HAD to spend a fortune ordering all their other stuff off of AmazonUK. And now you can get it at Borders!

Muse at Street Scene is still listed four times! (Dave Mathews at the HBowl twice, but there’s no way that could even come close to Dave Mathews at the Gorge!)

  27. Posted by fallafel 12/21/07 at 12:32 am #

MANU CHAO @ SPORTS ARENA? HELLOOOOO – how could that be missed!
