“Kowboyz” Finally Blessed With Merciful Razing

By - Friday January 11th 2008

the razing of kowboyz
The razing of Kowboyz, a formerly dingy, poorly-lit shack offering overpriced used western wear, boots-as-far-as-the-eye-can-see and a robust serving of Lynchian vibes for anyone brave enough to stumble through its brightly-painted door at 8050 Beverly, occurred yesterday morning. (citysearch) (yelp) (LA Weekly)

After the jump: Kowboyz’ Last Stand.

kowboyz: the last stand
Above: Kowboyz, January 11. Thanks to the tireless work of the LA Conservancy, the final historic load-bearing wall of Kowboyz has been preserved and will be maintained during construction of the newer, larger, considerably creepier albeit familiarly Jamaican-themed Kowboyz presently slated for an April 2008 opening.

What now?

that kind of bums me out. i loved that place. and i had a pair of boots i bought in nashville once when i was really drunk that i was going to take there to sell. funny cowboy boots from nashville are a little TOO funny to actually be able to pull off.

I think next door there was a place for out of town douches to rent luxury cars to impress LA girls who are impressed by such a thing.

they should raze swingers across the street, its time has come

Comment #3 gets my chuckle for the day.

That place actually started several blocks away, on Stanley Avenue just north of Beverly, in a small storefront. Like, around the corner where the Authentic Cafe used to be. I’m starting to show what an Old Fart I am.

It moved to that shack on Beverly probably around 1994 I think?

So they are opening another location or what?

Yes! Please send me your email and I’ll add you to the VIP list for our Kowboyz Fire Island Grand Opening bash!

They reopened in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I don’t know what it was like in LA, but here it is a really great store in a big old house filled with boots. We love cowboy boots in Santa Fe. I always called Santa Fe the cowboy boot capital of the world. Kowboyz is a great addition to our town and the boots are very reasonably priced.

Just got back from a southwest roadtrip and stumbled across their new store in Santa Fe. Walked out with a couple of $10 shirts and two pairs of awesome boots (which they cut a deal on) for a very good price! No complaints here! They have found a home in a a very cool town! They seem to be doing well, nice shop!

  15. Posted by Jewel 6/29/08 at 9:06 am #

    Rudestar,
I wonder if I waited on you. I think I remember you. Which boots did you get?

  16. Posted by Rudester 6/29/08 at 9:32 pm #

the two tone brown pair and a black pair, my buddy also bought a black pair from you. We’re from Califonia and got to talking about your move there. The store has a great vibe!!!

    I am SOOOOOOOOOO bummed!!!!!!!!!

I have been shopping there for YEARS!!! It’s one of my favorite places for boots and jackets that I discovered many moons ago when I was living at the Beverly Laurel. I have since moved to London and just visited LA for a week. I brought my husband and a pair of boots I have had for years (purchased in-store,) for a new spree and to get my old trustys repaired. I trapsed across LA on 3 buses to discover NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! There’s no shack at all!!! I even looked them up on citysearch to make sure of the hours beforehand. Nothing mentioned about the closing. When I got home I googled and found this site. Who’s going to repair my 1960′s eelskin Mexican boots? I don’t trust anyone else.

Damn. Another one bites the dust. I hate it when this happens!!

  19. Posted by Kowboyz Opens Cowboy Boot Website in Santa Fe 6/17/09 at 8:34 am #

Now you can shop for western wear in santa fe without leaving your home!

  20. Posted by Jewel 6/17/09 at 7:23 pm #

kowboyz does not have a website. these links are just advertisements on the web. even if you want to call it a website, it is just for the purpose of advertising. you cannot shop online from these pages. you have to go to the store to buy boots.

  21. Posted by Take a road trip for cowboy boots? 6/18/09 at 5:59 pm #

Sure, I am the one who helped him with the site. I HIGHLY RECOMMENDED he put a shopping cart on the site to sell his boots and clothing online. If you know the “Kowboy” he is a little slow at these things. Maybe on your summer vacation you could take a trip? I do know if there is something special you want, he would most likely ship to you, I know he is planning to start selling on ebay.

  22. Posted by Jewel 6/18/09 at 6:26 pm #

    Is you Jim T?
He doesn’t WANT to start selling online. It’s been well thought out, besides, you really have to try boots on.
He will be doing an Ebay Store with specialty items…………………but as far as selling boots online, just think what it would entail putting 5,000 pairs of one of a kind boots online! Ya gotta just COME TO THE STORE!!!

  23. Posted by Jewel 6/18/09 at 6:28 pm #

Very nice website, by the way.

  24. Posted by Shawn 6/18/09 at 7:00 pm #

Thanks for the compliment.. there’s actually 3 sites! He is more dependent on tourist customers now. There’s a million boot stores in Santa Fe but his is still unique. Not so many hipsters.

No not Jim… I used to do some work for Brad, built the small annex for him at his store on Beverly and ran the store occasionally. I live up in Kern Valley for last few years but keep in touch with him. Sure, you gotta try the boots on, the used ones especially but some of the new products and new western shirts definitely could be listed as he can get a fresh supply. The vintage stuff would suck as if you list it, tomorrow could be sold etc. so a LOT of work, listing and relisting but why not put some of the high dollar stuff online?

  25. Posted by Jewel 6/18/09 at 7:10 pm #

well he’s gonna put the high dollar vintage stuff online.

  26. Posted by Take a road trip for cowboy boots? 6/18/09 at 7:25 pm #

but of course he will :)

  27. Posted by Ryan 6/19/09 at 7:15 am #

Jewel / Links Guy: Did you guys want to sell a miniscule scrap of the good ol’ Beverly shack online? Might fetch top dollar in the right market. Send a private message to [email protected]g.vessel.com and we’ll work out the comish. Have a great weekend!

hey ryan, i’m not advertising anything, i was just responding to “Now you can shop for western wear in santa fe without leaving your home”, because it’s not true and i wanted the correct info out there. the closest i came to advertising was when i finished my sentence in caps (“come to the store” was in caps). there are folks on here that seriously want to know the whereabouts of kowboyz as expressed on this thread. hey, remember, you started this thread.

  29. Posted by Jewel 6/19/09 at 9:32 am #

hey ryan, how can i edit my posts here? one of mine appeared twice. can you delete the one that appears twice? is there an edit link? also how come my name isn’t in hypertext? jewel

  30. Posted by ryan 6/19/09 at 10:04 am #

All good jewel, actually enjoyed watching this thread become kowboyz central over time. I’m on the road here but will look into kowboyskommentkleanup when I find a moment.

  31. Posted by Jewel 6/19/09 at 10:25 am #

    thank you!!!

  32. Posted by Take a road trip for cowboy boots? 6/19/09 at 2:22 pm #

Ryan, no need to go willy-nilly… the whole point of enabling comments on a blog is for people to discuss “on-topic” subject matter. Seeing as how your original post is about Kowboyz’s store, and ALL the comments are more or less on topic as to what happened to the business, how much people enjoyed the store, and where it went now. This is not a “random advertising on a blog”, it is specific to the topic.

As long as you condemn his store (which is the minority opinion anyway), might as well let people talk about how they miss it and enjoyed it as well as allow the opportunity for new information on the place. If it was someone placing links to sell videos of sea cucumbers.. then I would say it wold be spammy.

  33. Posted by Brad Hammond 6/19/09 at 8:14 pm #

KOWBOYZ was one of the most unique and most missed stores that ever existed in Los Angeles (now doing very well in Santa Fe). For almost 20 years it catered to some of the biggest stars in the world and some of the nicest, happiest everyday people that also ever existed. It is still very much missed. Ryan wouldn’t be missed at all, I’m sure.

  34. Posted by Ryan 6/22/09 at 9:08 pm #

Dearest Jewel, I am now home and your duplicate comment was removed as requested. All you other grouches aren’t allowed to comment further, until you find your sense of humor. Don’t make me sic Egyptian Lover on you.
    Regards

(ps…big ups for using my copyrighted, all-rights-reserved photo on the official KOWBOYZ site, though! Mayhap I should be angry, but am just gosh darn flattered.)

  35. Posted by Jeannette 7/4/09 at 3:24 pm #

Seriously… I might just drive out to Kowboyz and cover the new location for Losanjealous. I hope a free pair of boots is in order for all that hassle.

  36. Posted by David 2/3/10 at 4:57 pm #

Bummer, I still have a $75 store credit written on the back of one of their business cards! Anyone want it?

    • Posted by Jewel 2/3/10 at 5:44 pm #

David why don’t you call the store and see if the credit will be honored if you mail it in and buy something over the phone. You’d have to pay shipping on whatever was sent but the Skully shirts are $88

  37. Posted by Jewel 2/3/10 at 5:41 pm #

Brad Hammond, the owner of Kowboyz passed away suddenly in mid November 2009. The store lives on in Santa Fe and is run by his wife.
