New Frog Eyes Video, New York Date
One of the more memorable rock moments of the last couple of years for me was catching Frog Eyes open for Wolf Parade at the Wiltern. Late to the advent of their existence, I had nary an inkling what to expect. Their barely-contained chaos and Carey Mercer’s voice–oh, that voice–thoroughly confounded me. Perhaps even frightened me a little. Whichever, it was in a good way. I suspect I still don’t get all there is to be gotten with these kids, but there’s no denying they are one of the more singular acts out there, Canadian or otherwise. This new video for “Idle Songs” from Tears of the Valedictorian looks like it cost -$6.00 to make, is incomprehensible and yet, somehow, perfect.

Holy sweet jesus. Cursory analysis shows two disparate plot lines that eventually weave together: (1) Low(er) budget version of Caveman (feat. Ringo Starr) (win tix now) is going down someplace in nature. Hedges are prominent. A grizzled grumpy man has a towel on head; mardi gras revelers shank each other in the clearing. (2) Man in suit looks at art on wall of whale and, later, a horse smoking a cigarette. (3) Man in suit joins the group in the hedge, with a sax … OR DOES HE??? . . .(4) around the 1:50 mark, the video becomes a parody of a textbook rock video.
This is pure Lynch territory. Likely we need a top 10 clue list a la mulholland drive:
1) What’s in the blanket in the clearing?
2) What paintings do you see, and why?
3) Pay very special attention to the 20 seconds of shaking fingers.
(etc)
ps, i loved that wiltern show as well
