Apple Product Placement All Over House

By Victor - Wednesday January 30th 2008

House

Anyone (not) catch the multiple instances of Apple product placement on last night’s new episode of House M.D.? A new high–or low, depending on your take–was reached. But lest you think it gratuitous, the props in question–an iPhone, a MacBook Pro and a MacBook (Or were they older Powerbook and iBook models?–Help me out here, Engadget or Gizmodo)–were woven into the plot fairly deftly: House steals James’s iPhone (James being the obvious character choice for iPhone ownership) and wraps it as a gift to himself, which he opens in front of his team with an aim to get the to raise the stakes of their Secret Santa; the team breaks into the patient’s home and brings back her and daughter’s Macs to scour their hard drives for personal history and diagnostic clues.

Even with all the nicely-framed product shots and even putting the words “Steve Jobs” in House’s mouth, the subtext, though, is that House himself does not own any of the Apple product in the episode and that probably is in keeping with his character. Just doesn’t strike me as a Mac guy, that House.

Sorry, no Apple here, just an extra frame of the lovely Olivia Wilde, the thinking man’s Megan Fox.

What now?

looks like a way old version of Mac on the laptop and i’m pretty sure that’s a macbook pro

In fact, House does have, at the very least, a Mac mini at home and we’ve seen the fellows using Macs. Being a Mac fan myself, it doesn’t bother me: they are fine products. And Hugh’s pal Stephen Fry is a huge Mac fan, so maybe he’s caught the ibug as well. :-)

Ha. I must have missed the Mac mini. On second thought, he does have one of those iPod speaker box things at home, so maybe he is a Mac guy after all.

But the keyboard on the MacBook Pro does not look like that. Looks more like a Powerbook to me.

There is also much product placement for Ikea. The Malm dresser makes appearances in nearly every episode.

SB, I’d like to personally thank you for unearthing this particularly pointless old post of mine. But I will take some credit for being ahead of the curve on the meteoric ascendancy of Olivia Wilde nearly 2 years ago.

House has an iPod nano for sure, in the beginning of season 3 when he’s running.

I just watched the most recent edpisode of House and had to immediately google ‘”house MD” mac sponsor’ because the amount of airtime the apple logo received was incredible.

    Thanks for the sanity check.

Ha. I thought of this dumb piece of mine watching last night’s ep. This ep. one completely blew that old episode out of water, had to have been the most egregious Apple product promo on TV in a ling while. Her MacBook Pro was practically a supporting character.
