LUCHA VA VOOM – FEBRUARY 12TH, 2008 AT THE MAYAN THEATRE – “LOVE IS IN THE AIR”

MEXICAN MASKED WRESTLING, SAUCY STRIPTEASE AND KATO KAELIN! WTF?

Lucha VaVoom Feb 2008!

Tuesday night was the first of three Lucha Va Voom shows at the Mayan Theatre downtown. These are the valentine-themed “Love is in the Air” performances, but I think there were more tequila fumes in the air than love. I have been to several Lucha Va Voom shows; this was not my favorite. [That’s the hangover talking. -ed] Although, a so-so Lucha Va Voom show is still 158% better than “Law and Order SVU” reruns on my couch. I definitely recommend checking out the final night Thursday.

7.26p
We arrived early and got a table, which is key if you’re buying the $30 tickets. The show started off flat with two burlesque dancers, the Queen of Hearts and the Queen of Clubs. It barely roused (or aroused) anyone in the normally raucous crowd.

8.32p
Things finally got underway when Dirty Sanchez entered the ring, donning his enormous merkin. Dirty Sanchez loves baring his ass, and in turn, the crowd loves to see Dirty Sanchez baring his ass. Next up was one of the better burlesque acts of the night, Roky Roulette, who bounced out on a horse pogo stick and stripped off his chaps. Good stuff – I like my male strippers to be bouncing and wearing assless chaps.

8.59p
The crowd favorite is always all things chicken. Los Crazy Chickens were up first and they did not disappoint. They matched up against the Hip Hop dynamo, Human Tornado and the Nascar-fan-looking Machine Gun Anderson. I love the chicken music and can hear it in my head for days after a show. Next up was Lil’ Chicken and the suntan-oiled-up Joey Ryan versus The Kissing Bandits. We decided that all of this chicken wrestling was making us hungry and decided to go to Roscoe’s afterwards.

9:20p
Is it the El Jimador tequila or is that a giant cupcake with legs on the stage? It’s a giant cupcake. With the stripper Pastelita inside. That was good. This was about the time when Maria fell off her stool and then John knocked over our entire table of drinks. I knew at that point that there was going to be puking involved sooner or later.

9.52p
Whoa, hot burlesque chick on stage! Whoa, hot burlesque chick is a dude. With a hula-hoop. This dude, Karis, can do things with a hula-hoop that seem really, really dirty. He’s fantastic.

10.32p

The headliner lucha act was Ultimo Guerrerro and Incognito versus the quite flamboyant midget Cassandro and Chupacabra. Gay midgets and fictitious Mexican monsters always go over big.

Time unknown due to tequila consumption
The announcer said that the final act was for the ladies in honor of Valentine’s Day and about 15 men who you don’t really want to see naked began gyrating and stripping. Is it the El Jimador tequila or is that guy in the g-string and cowboy boots Kato Kaelin? No, that’s Kato Kaelin. Good to see he’s still acting and working on his craft.

12.15a
Roscoe’s for chicken and waffles. John puked out of the car window on the ride home. It was pretty much as perfect an evening as can be.
