It may apply in the broadest geographic sense--note, though, that Gainesville is well inland from both of Florida's coasts and actually has <i>hills</i>--but culturally it is the southernmost bulwark of the Deepest South. Or, as Baltimore native Cex memorably put it, "Florida (Is Shaped Like a Big Droopy Dick for a Reason)."
