I'll have to give Willoughby a try. One of Oak/Rosewood has unlighted crossings at some busy intersections.
Thanks T-dub

Willoughby is a good alternative to Melrose around there, too. I have a friend I visit at Melrose and Sweetzer; I live at Melrose and Western. I take Melrose to Gower, then north to Willoughby. It's got some 4-way stops, plus lights across all the major streets.

Fourth Street totally rules, too, if you're farther south and going east-west anywhere between Hancock Park and just east of Virgil.

You're both right, Oakwood is my friend. I had to stop at an ATM on Melrose and wasn't sure exactly where it was, so riding in the alley, I was able to spot it. As for schizo streets, I'm trying to become less chickenshit every day.

I've transected Melrose by bike many a time from its western origins at Doheny all the way to its eastern terminus at Hoover. It's definitely a schizo street. Parts of it are a good roll and parts are some of the worst a cyclist can find in the city.

I'm with Stephen in recommending Rosewood or Oakwood over the alleys south of Melrose. For that matter Fountain Avenue's not very far away to the north and infinitely more rideable.

But wherever you go, whatever you do: just keep on doing what you're doing: riding.

I ride Melrose from La Cienega to Heliotrope every time i bike home from work. Personally I don't find it as scary but give Rosewood or Oakwood a try. They're residential streets south of Melrose so there's a lot of 4 way stops, but it's a more relaxing ride.
