Even Mogwai joked about them on their blog (although sort of…sort of.. rescinded it in the next entry):

“People loved Fuck Buttons’ set and it made me wonder how brutally strong the LSD must be in this city. I mean, some guy shouting into a children’s toy while another mentally ill person screams monkey noises into a cheap effects pedal really just isn’t enjoyable unless you’ve been fed an heroic dose of hallucinogenic drugs.”

PS – It takes just as much God-given infinite wisdom to say Fuck Buttons was great and I’m wrong…. doesn’t it?

Al, ask yourself, why did Mogwai ask them to open, huh? Guess they must be deaf and can’t hear how horrible Fuck Buttons are, unlike you and your infinite God-given musical wisdom.

their music might not be groundbreaking, and in that sense “interesting”, but i do find their textures/unified aesthetic quite compelling. the atmosphere they’re after requires a certain patience. it’s like watching a tarkovsky film, or something. yes, it’s artsy shite, and really long, and very slow, but if you allow yourself to be enveloped by it you can find yourself being taken to places that, to be frank, modern music rarely even shoots for. they paint pictures and create worlds. but, of course, if you’re not into it completely then i can understand how you would find the set unbearable. i guess it’s your loss?

going into the show, i had never heard fuck buttons and was only vaguely familiar with mogwai. during the fuck buttons set, i text my friend:

“please reassure me that mogwai is infinitely better than fuck buttons, the worst thing in the world. ever.”

he replies “absolutely. yeah, mogwai always tours with artsy shit in the states.”

only ‘artsy shit’ is too kind a description. this was an absolute abortion of a performance, or audio exhibition, or whatever it was. the majority of the concert-goers seemed confused and angered over fuck buttons but of course there were attention-craving scenesters who applauded and cheered at the end of the set as if they had just witnessed a fucking miracle like that dead fucker, ian from joy division, resurrect from the dead to collaborate with my bloody valetine to sing a shoegazey rendition of “love will tear us apart.”

You just implied the people who came to see the same band you did… don’t like good music.

Repetitious loops and rhythms are nothing new. Get a copy of Ableton Live (or any similar software) and you’ll see how hard it is to make music that “circles around and round.” Two guys fiddling around with digital delay and loops is neither groundbreaking nor interesting.

I’m not sure where either of “the lot” of us said anything about the band reflecting on ourselves. However, I will agree with you – we were sad. Sad that the opening band was so bad.
