Charles Phoenix’s Slide of the Week: Halloween Party, Whittier, CA 1958

These woman all work in the Whittler High School cafeteria. The jailbird, the cowgirl, the angel, the Nordic princess on her way to a kabuki festival, smoking a corn cob pipe, and Tom Cruise in Top Gun. Together they sit on and before a shapely sofa upholstered in a deep turquoise fabric sparkling with silver metallic threads. And then there?s the lady on the right sporting a football jersey and sweatpants. She stares at a flaming orange taper while moving her hands up and down. What is she supposed to be and what is she doing? And what’s with her very unusual lap display? Everyone knows that russet potatoes don’t have anything to do with Halloween!
Here’s to ladies that work in cafeterias, russet potato lap displays and Halloween!

What Are You Going As?
By
Ryan - Thursday October 30th 2008
I am going as DR TEETH from the Electric Mayhem. Not Sexy Dr Teeth; just regular Dr Teeth. Golden teeth and golden tones. Welcome to my presence! It is not super easy, crafting a phallic muppet nose by hand. But it can be done. I am almost finished! I just need somebody to carry my Hammond Organ around. Takers?
What are you going as!? And who’s going where? If you are not headed to a house party or WeHo, there are a ton of killer concerts and events tomorrow, many of which are not sold out. Peep the knowledge base and we’ll see you out there!

No Age Tapped to Introduce ShockHound to the Masses
By
Victor - Thursday October 30th 2008
PHOTO: No Age by Sung.
Maybe you’ve seen these ShockHound ads on the site–maybe there’s even one up there right now, 6 inches above this very sentence–and wondering what the hell it is. To be honest, even we weren’t completely sure until today, as news comes fresh off the wire from beautiful City of Industry:
ShockHound is a one-stop, genre-spanning music site loaded with millions of MP3s, a vast selection of band merchandise, the latest music videos, unique programming, and exclusive and compelling editorial content.
Got that? Good. Check out the site for the full experience.
Now, onto the free shows.
Who more appropriate than our city’s finest No Age to lead the launch for this LA-based venture with a series of 4 free shows across the States. The tour kicks off in early November in NYC and goes on to Chicago, San Francisco and, of course, right here Los Angeles. Jersey’s Titus Andronicus joins them on the tour.
As the exclusive web partner to the LA show, we’ll have the full details right here soon, including how to score the free tickets. Check back early and often in November.

Well I Hope Neil Young Will Remember
A southern man don’t need him around, anyhow! Also, Watergate did not bother me. Remember Neil, not just any band becomes an honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Alabama State Militia courtesy George Wallace. I guess since the show is cancelled let’s go drink some fuckin’ beers and run down some strangers in the alley.
Young elected to cancel the [Oct 30 Forum feat. Death Cab and Everest] performance rather than cross what IATSE told his representatives would be a picket line at his show. Young and his wife are honorary lifetime members of the IATSE.

Under $10: Bab Jip Corean Cuisine
By
Ryan - Tuesday October 28th 2008
PREFACE
I had not posted a single photo on Flickr for 365 straight days. I logged in. I looked at the photos in my “contact list.” Karen had posted these killer photos of the food at some joint on south La Brea. South La Brea is central. Central is good. The photos looked not so much like Korean fast food as they did fresh food, made fast. Specifically, mini sliders and bulgogi tacos. At first glance, my lunch plans were laid out.
PART ONE: AMBIENCE
Sure enough, Bab Jip is fresh food, made fast. Rockin’ little joint, mid wilsh. Flatscreens, techno, wood-and-rock panelling. Counter. Indoor and outdoor seating. La Brea foot-and-bus traffic does its thing just outside the glass wall, giving the eyeball plenty of material with which to work. I like the nod to pre-invasion Corea. Not sure why it’s spelled “Corea”? Don’t bother googling you’ll probably just find this guy’s afro and a keyboard setup that could put Rick Wakeman against the ropes. Try this essay; very informative.

& Everest
Thursday October 30
The Forum
Info
UPDATE 10/29: SHOW CANCELED.
From the press release:
After the Bridge School Benefit Concert this past Sunday, Young was advised that the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) union, Local 33, planned to picket his show at the Forum this Thursday. Young elected to cancel the performance rather than cross what IATSE told his representatives would be a picket line at his show. Young and his wife are honorary lifetime members of the IATSE. ” I am extremely disappointed to have to choose between satisfying my fans or backing my brothers and sisters of the IATSE,” Young said from San Diego. ” I will miss playing in Los Angeles and apologize to my fans for the inconvenience this has caused.”
Young’s Los Angeles date will be rescheduled for sometime in 2009. Ticket holders will be able to get refunds at place of purchase.

Historic November Date Draws Near
By
Ryan - Monday October 27th 2008

Doubtless you knew I was referring to November 9, which is the cutoff date for adding a wish to one of Yoko Ono’s wish trees currently choking the entrance patio of Gordon Biersch in Old Town Pasadena. In a nutshell:
- You have until November 9 to go to Pasadena, make a wish and tie it to one of the (at this point) heavily-taxed, overburdened Crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) shrub trees
- Your wish will be removed from the Lagerstroemia indica to which it was previously affixed
- Your wish will be exported to Iceland
-
Your wish will be inserted into a space-age capsule
- Using a top-of-the-line Nupla™ drain spade shovel (presumed), Yoko Ono will dig a hole and bury your wish near the Imagine Peace Tower on Videy Island, off the coast of Reykjavík, Iceland
- Somehow, by way of it being buried near the Luxor-aping tower of light, your wish will then be “broadcast” up to the heavens with all of the other wishes
Further:
The tower, a column of light emanating from a stone base with a radius of about 10 meters, is lit for two months each year starting on October 9, John Lennon’s birthday, and ending on December 9, the anniversary of his death. (source)
The once-in-a-life historic November date approaches rapidly; don’t delay.

Janes Addiction @ La Cita, October 23: Pictures And Video
By
Ryan - Friday October 24th 2008
Whoops! That should read, “Pictures and video wanted.” Who’s holding? Please remit. I found three reviews of the show this morning (they follow), and they aren’t telling me a thing:
I just walked down to Ye Old Taco House Numero Uno to grab a burrito and was greeted by a line of people. “WTF?” I thought, “Did some film crew just get off work and everyone got a wild hair up their ass to come get a cheap burrito?” I would quickly learn the answer to that question was, “No.”
(Downtown Liberation Front)
Tonight the original lineup of Janes Addiction is playing the tiny ass downtown mexican bar “La Cita”, known mostly for it’s post-raver neon hoody wearing banger electro coke-sniffing hipster parties. Sweet.
Good luck getting anywhere near the venue, as it is likely to be a Hollywood douche scene for at least a 3 block radius. But if you do, take pictures and tell me about it.
(Make out club)
Anyone get in tonight? I totally got shut down. I spoke to one guy who had been waiting in line since 3pm today and didn’t get in. That’s what happens when a supposedly secret show get leaked on indie 103.1… The bar holds less than 400 people — must have been a great show. I hope they go on tour now.
(Yelp)
UPDATE – 850am
K-Ron 75 is first on the scene over at Flickr, including the obligatory set list shot.
UPDATES – 3pm
Reviews and bitchy comments galore: Kevin Bronson, Califaudio, more Flickr photos, Dave Navarro blogs it (Did I mention? Those who went to Stereolab last night and turned on Showtime after arriving home at a sensible hour (1am) also saw Dave Navarro, rebroadcast, hosting the red carpets at the AVN Awards in Vegas)

1820 N Vermont Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90027

There comes a time in every single girl’s life when she realizes that if she eats one more goddamned meal in front of her computer, lounging against a couple pillows propped up on her bed, she’s going to go absolutely crazy. I’m sure you’ve been there. Luckily, last night I had a friend who was not only as hungry as I was, but as broke as I am, too.
Despite the plethora of taco stands and cheap Thai joints that pepper Los Angeles, I had a hard time coming up with a suitable option for our destination, one that fit with my “eating for under ten bucks” mission. I scoured the streets of Los Angeles in my mind as I applied my make-up and attempted to make myself somewhat presentable to the outside world. Just as my friend impatiently honked his horn out front for the second time, as I was slipping my feet into my favorite black flats, I remembered the little Japanese hole-in-the-wall that I had spotted on Vermont many times in the past, but had yet to try.

Ghostland Observatory, Mayan Theater, October 16, 2008
By
Daiana - Monday October 20th 2008
It could be Independence Day on E.T.’s planet, between the Mayan’s agrocrag décor, the spaceship regulation size disco ball hovering onstage, and Thomas Turner’s shiny homemade cape. The music—what might occur if DJ Assault beats slowed down, meeting Andy Gibb and James Brown in the middle.

Every person attending the Ghostland Observatory show most definitely spends a good portion of alone time dancing. That’s not saying everyone inclined to dancing with themselves loves Ghostland, but everyone who likes this band definitely dances around the house. That’s what happens when you turn it on. I just happened to be standing when the album began playing. Guess what happened?
