Janes Addiction @ La Cita, October 23: Pictures And Video

By Ryan - Friday October 24th 2008

briansaddictionWhoops! That should read, “Pictures and video wanted.” Who’s holding? Please remit. I found three reviews of the show this morning (they follow), and they aren’t telling me a thing:

I just walked down to Ye Old Taco House Numero Uno to grab a burrito and was greeted by a line of people. “WTF?” I thought, “Did some film crew just get off work and everyone got a wild hair up their ass to come get a cheap burrito?” I would quickly learn the answer to that question was, “No.”
(Downtown Liberation Front)

Tonight the original lineup of Janes Addiction is playing the tiny ass downtown mexican bar “La Cita”, known mostly for it’s post-raver neon hoody wearing banger electro coke-sniffing hipster parties. Sweet.

Good luck getting anywhere near the venue, as it is likely to be a Hollywood douche scene for at least a 3 block radius. But if you do, take pictures and tell me about it.
(Make out club)

Anyone get in tonight? I totally got shut down. I spoke to one guy who had been waiting in line since 3pm today and didn’t get in. That’s what happens when a supposedly secret show get leaked on indie 103.1… The bar holds less than 400 people — must have been a great show. I hope they go on tour now.
(Yelp)

UPDATE – 850am
K-Ron 75 is first on the scene over at Flickr, including the obligatory set list shot.

UPDATES – 3pm
Reviews and bitchy comments galore: Kevin Bronson, Califaudio, more Flickr photos, Dave Navarro blogs it (Did I mention? Those who went to Stereolab last night and turned on Showtime after arriving home at a sensible hour (1am) also saw Dave Navarro, rebroadcast, hosting the red carpets at the AVN Awards in Vegas)

What now?

This was a total crock. We were among those who waited in line for 6 hours and didn’t get in.

Alleged fire marshal issues and a big friends and family guest list.

Perry, Dave, and etc. . . if you’re going to throw a private party then go for it. . . But don’t invite us ‘commoners’ to join you unless you can actually get us in.

What a disappointment for the diehards.

After years of being a true fan of Jane’s, I agree this was crap. The true fans like myself that waited for hours just to see A-List people go in who don’t even care about the band was messed up.
Put a reality check on your promoters and managers. And screw the A-list people, you can throw a private party for them whenever! Jane’s is supposed to be about inviting the true party people who enjoy the music not those the fake posers. Man I hope you guys realize this was bull! Puro Los Angeles.

was going to cruise by around 9 to see the likelihood of getting in. glad i opted to stay at home. have had too many experiences being shut out of free/cheap/small venue shows by big name acts that my optimism and hopefulness was quashed before it had a chance to develop.

So, it was well worth the wait (and drive). Got there at just before 10 from San Diego – after having to be in dowtown LA for work all day. Folks were in three different lines (two at front, one at back/side of La Cita), some watiing since that morning.

Place was tiny – they said their capacity (which could appraoch 400+?) was capped at 257 because the Fire Marshall was there, and he stayed there all night. For real, I had to pass the guy inside…The band went on around 11, I was still outside, I worked all three doors, eventually the staff at La Cita, who were all very cool by the way, started letting people in here and there.
I was lucky enough to have talked to enough of them, and the folks at the next door taco stand – who are also very cool, to have made a couple friends and got in a little over half way through the set. You could hear the set the whole night though, especially at the side/back line, where the doors were open all night, so the first few songs were pure torture.

They played for about an hour, 10 songs, awesome. Best part: all old stuff – Almost all songs were from XXX and Nothing’s Shocking: Opened with Up the Beach, followed by Trip away and Whores (finally!), then into 1% and Aint No Right, then Pigs in Zen and Ted Just Admit it. Next went into Oceansize and Had a Dad. Closed with Been Caught Stealing. Only thing that coulda made it better (besides not having to wait around and finaggle my way in) was if they played Mountain Song and Three Days….but I’ll give ‘em some slack there, they played a nice long set and picked great songs, plus Three Days is almost impossible to play live anyaways, and although I didn’t get to see the show from start to finish, I was just glad to make it in – Place was about 120 degrees innside, humidity of 1000%, but that didnt phase anyone. It was hard to work your way around any part of crowd too – sardines…

Their set was also on one of the tiniest “stages” ever, on basically floor level (which they said they expanded by 4 feet – also cutting off some of their capacity). Made for a great old school neighborhood dive bar-like performance.

One of the media folks for La Cita said he’ll post stremaing video of the show (from three cameras) this week…we’ll see if he does.

Side note: Taylor from the Foos and Adrian from No Doubt were causally hanging out in audience and kicking it, seemed really cool as folks approached them to talk/say hi.

Ridiculous show…hope they do it again some day…

True that some in the “VIP” line did not get in, but I saw all the A-Lister getting in without any problems, as they passed the Fire Marshal (whom I may add did stay for the entirety of the show).

My wife and I were one of the lucky ones. Having arrived early enough to catch Perry arrive for rehearsal, taking a pic with him, and befriending his long time friend, and manager I believe, (I won’t say his name, but let’s just say if the front door of La Cita were heaven last night, he’d be the guy the gates) he picked us out of the crowd in the front and got us in half way thru their set! Thanks big guy, where ever you are!

They also handed out free limited edition poster of the show. You can see one of them here (they had two flavors), along with some pics from last night.

Again, we were lucky enough to get two copies, 413 & 418/450 baby!

The last time we saw them in a small venue was(OMG I just realized that was 1990!!!!) was when they played for three days at the Hollywood Palladium (The Pixies and Primus opened.)

I am a diehard, and I got there at 10AM, I got in. I waited 13 hours, so quit complaining if you were there 3 hours early and didn’t get in. Come on, this is a band that hadn’t played since 1991. :)

The VIP area was a complete mess. Some industry guy named ‘Peter’ was a real wanker and was only catering to the likes of MaryKate Olsen and her friends who tried to look fashionably homeless (mind you, she had 4 people with her when capacity was limited) and some other no-name TV people which I’m sure ‘Peter’ gets perks from. The older industry people are killing it by trying way too hard to be self important and just don’t understand it anymore. Fans were on such a downer before they even got it. THEN, on top of that, the fans were treated like s***. Doormen tried to be too cool for their own good. Was just a bad vibe all around. The waiting in line was the least of the problems. It doesn’t make me like the band any less but management was really poor. Sucks it had to happen to such a cool band.

So I’m a bit late to the comments, but here are my pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/angstdei/sets/72157608432593592/

    And here’s what I wrote:

I was very, very lucky. My brother works there. I drank back on the patio for three hours while everything was being set up. According to my brother, about 60 people each from the RSVP line and the General line were brought in. The rest was friends and family, I guess, but believe me, they jammed as many people in there as they possibly could. People were hanging off banisters, and squeezing between speaker stacks and the ceiling.

What’s the over/under on how many will get in to El Cid tomorrow?

  11. Posted by Ryan 11/19/08 at 3:28 pm # Reply

I’ve given up tracking the band and its secret shows, but definitely sensing a trend moving from feminine to masculine stages of late

You’re right. First it was at El Rey, then La Cita, and now El Cid.

Anyone have any pics and / or vids of last night’s show at El Cid? I found these pics, the show looks like it was off the chain!
