DEVELOPING: Following “Yes On 8″ Donation Discovery, LA Blog Commenters In Full-On Crazy Tizzy Over Boycott of Insufferably Bad Restaurant
THE STORY TO DATE
Some manager (and Agent for Service of Process) at El Coyote, an insufferably terrible restaurant with strong drinks to make you forget about the mind-blowingly horrible food and parking nightmares, donated $100 to a direct “Yes on 8″ organization (protectmarriage.com), thereby potentially giving outraged citizens a tangible reason to not further patronize the insufferable, taste-void, overblown, overpriced tourist haven.
THE BLOG-O-SPHERE REACTION AND FALLOUT
Local blogs picked up the story. As if people needed another reason beyond the undeniable, perfectly obvious, in-your-face, purely logical reasons not to go to El Coyote, now this had to happen. Things are just not looking good for El Coyote. Some people are threatening to boycott. Others are content to discuss, in detail, the pros and cons of such a boycott via the comment section of their preferred local blog of choice.
THE POST-DISCOVERY MARGARITA-SUFFUSED OLIVE BRANCH
El Coyote is offering a free lunch and discussion tomorrow in an attempt to alleviate the immediate, comment-worthy, potentially-boycott-worthy situation. (It is presumed that El Coyote food will be served at the lunch.)
LOCAL BLOGS SOUND OFF (AND THE COMMENTERS GO INTO A FULL-ON PASSIONATE TIZZY ACCORDINGLY. IF ONLY COMMENTS COULD REVERSE UNFORTUNATE, MISGUIDED VOTES AFTER THE FACT. IF ONLY I COULD BOTTLE AND SELL THE ENERGY IN COMMENTS! DIGRESS…)

I am pro-civil union as well and I want gay couples to be protected. Marriage is not a fundamental right. Why would gay people want to change the definition of something that already exists. I also think Bar Mitzvahs are for a 13 year old Jewish boys and Quinceaneras are for 15 year old Spanish girls. I’m a 28 year old female. I would like a Bar Mitzvah. Can I have one? Why not go with civil unions OR I would be all for creating some other new institution that is unique and special for gay couples that want to commit and have marriage-like rights, such as healthcare, etc. It confuses me when life, liberty and the persuit of happiness is interpreted to include various social issues like marriage and education. No one should have problems with inheritance issues, visiting a loved one in the hospital, etc. I just think (and some of my gay friends agree) that the label marriage defines a union between a man and a woman. I agree with you Mario, sometimes when you drop your opinion on this one, people lump you in with the far right crazies or religious zealots.
“If someone gave a $100 check to support YES on 8, it does not make them an evil villan [sic].”
Yes it does. They donated money in order to deny someone else a fundamental right.
Ruth, I really give you props for being honest.
There are a lot of us who feel the same way.
Just because I voted YES on Prop 8 does not make me a “homophobe” or anti-gay. I also voted YES to Barack Obama — who is not for the oxymoronic “gay marriage” but pro civil unions for legal purposes. Which is what this issue is.
Unfortunately saying you’re YES on Prop 8 means getting lumped in with intolerant Conservatives and Evangelical douchebags. There are very unlikeable extremists on both sides.
All this tug-of-war gets us nowhere.
Godwin’s Law (also known as Godwin’s Rule of Nazi Analogies)[1] is an adage formulated by Mike Godwin in 1990. The law states:[2][3]
“As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.”
Godwin’s Law is often cited in online discussions as a deterrent against the use of arguments in the reductio ad Hitlerum form.
The rule does not make any statement whether any particular reference or comparison to Hitler or the Nazis might be appropriate, but only asserts that one arising is increasingly probable. It is precisely because such a comparison or reference may sometimes be appropriate, Godwin has argued[4] that overuse of Nazi and Hitler comparisons should be avoided, because it robs the valid comparisons of their impact. Although in one of its early forms Godwin’s Law referred specifically to Usenet newsgroup discussions,[5] the law is now applied to any threaded online discussion: electronic mailing lists, message boards, chat rooms, and more recently blog comment threads and wiki talk pages.
People, don’t be stupid! This isn’t about your opinion or anyone else’s. Mormons FUNDED a proposition that is and has been determined to be unconstitutional. That’s right. Unconstitutional. History shows that the majority is often wrong. Take a look at Nazi Germany, at slavery in the U.S., at how marriage used to mean a man’s selling his daughter to another man, a black and white person’s not being permitted to marry, Abraham’s polygamy, Joseph Smith’s polygamy. This list of ignorant masses and continual evolution of what marriage means and how it has indeed been tied to Women’s Rights and Civil Rights is a long one . Ignorant people who use a platform of religion to launch their fear and prejudice will, once again, be told by the Supreme Court that their discomfort, their opinions and prejudices, do not constitute law. Never underestimate the ignorance of the masses. The Mormons manipulated the easy masses with their well-organized, lie-based campaign. The gay community and its straight allies — labor, teachers, every major black leader (many who lived through the Civil Rights movement), CA governor, LA and SF mayors, even Barak Obama in the 11th hour took the brave stand and lent his voice to No on 8 — underestimated the ignorance of the masses, and we got slapped for it. Open your heart and close your mouth for a minute. Listen to your conscience. Listen to MLK speeches. Read what Christ said. Not a word about gays. The Biblical references to gays are among Old Testament laws about stoning people for adultery. The pro-8 logic is strained and absolutely steeped in fear and inaccuracies. There is nothing Christian about short-sighted hatred. This thinking would make Jesus weep.
I voted yes on prop 8 based upon my belief and right to worship God the way I see fit. My bible says marriage is between a man and a woman. Just like it was God, that this prop was on the ballot during a year inwhich many folks would be voting, it will be Gods blessing that the folks at this restaurant will be taken care of. In fact, I plan to start a chain email that encourages other people who support the prop to send the owner money. God will prevail…you all need to go forward and develop initiatives that promote civil unions that include all the rights of marriage. Leave the word marriage alone…it will never work. Your angry vile will only turn people against you that may have been support even though they don’t believe in Gay or Lesbian relationships. You can retalitate, and so can other people, and whatever you do stop comparing this situation to the Black Civil Rights Movement, or to interacial marriages….this will certainly get folks mad.
One of my best friends is a lesbian.
GODWIN’D!
I don’t think Ruth actually knows any homosexuals, of either gender.
Also, check the Godwin action up there.
I love the way liberals pretend to be tolerant and full of love, until someone has a different point of view. Even if that someone is not radical or even mean. If someone gave a $100 check to support YES on 8, it does not make them an evil villan. It makes them different from you. We should respect our differences. I respect gay people, but I get the impression if that if I ever told a gay person I don’t believe or think exactly the way they do, then they turn into narcissistic, hating people full of intolerance. How come the gay community does not protest Muslims who forbid gayness under sharia law. It is estimated that Muslims voted YES on 8 like 98% across the board. Much easier to target Mormons or Christians. BTW, not every Mormom or Christian voted yes.

It seems very childish to seek out people who have different political or social views and sabotage their business. The owner of this restaurant did not do a business donation, his wife donated privately what he stated on the radio. I do not agree with everyone who voted for or against prop 8, but I have sympathy for both who want to marry and those that think marriage is just between a man and woman. I would never try to harm someones livlihood. Does the gay community realize how the largely back southern baptist community in LA voted on 8. Overwhelmingly yes. But, it is more PC to protest in front of the predominantly white mormon church. I think if people are to be taken seriously then they need to act rationally and take the proper steps, like go to the Supreme Court. This is not 1932 Germany. This is like Hitler telling everyone not to go to a Jewish estabilishment. If the food sucks, then don’t go, but for gosh sakes what it sounds like you are doing is wrong.
[…] it doesn’t stop even here. A manager at El Coyote, a restaurant in Los Angeles, apparently donated $100 to an organization which was trying to the proposition passed. Now there’s calls […]
Thank you for your post “oh Well : 11/12/08 at 7:14 am.” Two things I take from your violent comments:
1. The only reason you are filled with the holy spirit is to avoid hell, not because of the good it brings. I draw this conclusion because you say get filled or end up in hell.
2. We do not suffer from Oedipus complex nor do we believe in f’ing our mothers, nor do we necessarily believe in “pounding” unless our partner is into that.
items.
1) @El Chavo, you never cease to impress. I commend the fact that you have never in your life been there, while at the same time wonder how you have pulled it off. (Teach me, sensei)
2) @topdog, can I get an “amen” for La Cabana added to the list, simply for sucking and charging double for it.
3) @La V: I’m sending you some El Coyote for dinner, via courier. It’s leftover from way before the election, so you should be in the clear. Also: New post! Today’s update is mind-boggling. Damage Intensifying Town Hall writeup here:
EL Coyote Prop 8 “Press” Conference w/ MARJORIE CHRISTOFFERSEN
Get saved santified and filled with the holy ghost or your soul will end up in hell burining for the rest of your eternity. You folks are sick go find the opposite sex to pound on nasty m.f’s
As an LA born and raised adult that has yet to visit El Coyote, I’m proud to now proclaim that my refusal to visit this establishment of known shitty Mexican food was always based on the knowledge that it would someday be tied to some messed up discrimination practice. You can count on me avoiding this joint even after you’ve found some reason to rescind your boycott! Fer Reals!
Despite the fact that the food may suck, I completely disagree with the fact that you believe the way someone was raised, be it conservative in this case, warrants personal attacks on their character (calling the proprietor a “homo-phobe”). The owner who is clearly mexican and without a doubt must have been raised a devoutly catholic doesn’t he may be homophobic. The clear lack of empathy you show makes you as terrible as you portray the owner of this place to be.
El Coyote has been terrible for over 35 years. I am so thrilled to hear someone voice the obvious. Can you please include La Cabana in your list of places to boycott, because although it may not have a wayward manager with ignorant political leanings, it definitely also has singularly craptastic food and overpriced adult beverages. Otherwise discerning, intelligent people love these establishments. What gives?!!
I completely agree with your take. El Coyote’s food is terrible, and in L.A. there are countless better Mexican food options. A manager-owner’s homophobia just adds another reason to avoid the place.
I can’t believe The Yote manager would act this way intentionally. The Church makes you do wacky things. As far as the terrible food, that may be true but it will be hard to boycott the LA fave. I can’t attend lunch but I hope they make clear themselves and help REVOKE Prop 8
you guys have the best graphic. nothing else to say that hasn’t been put way more annoyingly in any of the other blogs. losanjealous, you should be proud of your readers that this is the only comment.
