bitches Head downtown for a great discussion: NYT critic Ben Ratliff will talk with sax player/clarinetist Bennie Maupin (of Bitches Brew fame) (pictured, over there to the right) (Bitches Brew, silly, not Bennie Maupin) at 7pm this evening. Did You Know? Maupin also played on Headhunters. He’s what you might consider a heavyweight. Buy your Losanjealous editors some choice suds at Library Bar one hour prior.

Here he talks with an exceptional musician not in the book: L.A. -based saxophonist Maupin, famous for his role in Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew and for his own critically acclaimed albums.

Man, why didn’t you tell me about this more than 90 minutes before the event? Damn it! I love Bennie Maupin’s work!

Yeah, I def. should have posted this earlier, Pete. RSVP’d earlier this week and then snoozed due to prior commitments, thus the late notification.

FWIW, great dialogue, amazing chill-inducing anecdotes (read: so I was with Coltrane and blah blah. So I was with Ornette and blah blah), Bennie is remarkably sincere, and he pulled out a bass clarinet to end the evening. Couldn’t ask for more.
