Reader Picks: Your Favorite Concert, 2008
And so it begins again. As we did last year, we’re saving you the trouble of wading through a crap-ton of boring “best of” editorial lists, and instead giving you the opportunity to create your own, right here on our site. After all, this is an interactive community.
Last year the Losanjealous “best concert” poll garnered more than 145,000 total votes from humans and robots alike. With that in mind, things to remember while going crazy with this poll:
- You don’t need 1000 signatures to get your concert on this ballot. To add a concert choice to the poll, click the “add an answer” button ONCE. When the entry field appears, enter your concert and click the “vote” button. Voila; you are done.
- Scour the list carefully and make sure your favorite concert is NOT ALREADY LISTED before using the “add an answer” function. If you don’t do this, don’t count on us manually adding your damn votes by consolidating (as we graciously did last year)
- Local concerts only please
- “Best Festival” will come separately, so do please keep all your Detours Coachellas Eagle Rock Music Fests and whatnot out of the running here
- No concert is too big; no concert is too small
- Include the date whenever possible, particularly where multiple artist-venue pairings exist (ie, sample submission might look like: Stallone Is Eating Hot Peppers @ Spaceland, August 7 (free monday residencies but this one was the best)
- IMPORTANT: If you don’t see your vote or choice immediately reflected, don’t panic and don’t add it again: our caching system is notoriously hardcore. Clear your cache and/or come back after a few minutes (or do both). Check thyself and refer to bullet point two above.
- Vote as often as you like
- Vote again, even after you stop liking
- Stick around for the end-of-year results!
Remember, people, bragging rights for calendar year 2009 are at stake here. Without further ado…HERE WE GO (starting the proceedings with two of my personal favorites):
UPDATE, 12/31/08: Polls closed as of New Years Eve.
Happy New Year!
Did Aziz Win!?
Did Radiohead Win?
Results will be posted early 2009. Check back.

[...] ha ha. He’s in third place at press time. If he wins top honors you have only yourself to blame. Get out the vote! You have [...]
nice job Andy Walo now we all know you play at starboard attitude (?) every saturday. You’re definitely #1, man!
How could it be anything but Radiohead Night 2 w/ Jay Z coming in second.
[...] Vote, people. Vote once now, twice after work, once during the rain-suffused commute home (only while stopped, please, unless you’re on a bus or walking) and 86 times this evening. It is your right. It is your responsibility. Go vote. [...]
Man if you would of been at that Aziz show you would understand. He bit the head off a live chicken.
Ok listen up, people. Based on the sudden surge in votes, clearly some of you are employing robot voters. Not against the rules per se, but I would urge you to take a look at the fine print in the bullet points above. “Every saturday” “every monday” “every other night” “four times on sunday afternoons, each and every sunday” … such entries do not constitute an individual concert and will eventually be scrubbed – and the artist flagged as suspect for future entries. Just so’s you know. (Yes Andy Walo Entry, I am looking directly at you)
Don’t blame Andy. It appeared in a blog today, perhaps there are just a lot of fans voting.
Pick a date, all his concerts are great.
and for the record J, the Starboard Attitude is in Redondo Beach on the pier.
To clarify #7: Pageviews definitely do not reflect a “lot of fans voting” (yet)
Again:
Robots
Andy Walo is generic blues rock. What’s so special about that. I bet his shows are horrible.
Ok, so before I get shot, I didnot vote for walo@any show…..
But reading your own rules, you say vote as many times as you want. Thenyou choose to hold an ARTIST responsible for someone who may or may not be the artist voting elevnetybillion tmes?
Seems like perhaps there may be some sour grapes there. Is it something personal against THIS artist? You even point out that last year you counted robots….
I do say “vote as many times as you want.”
I don’t say “vote your yearlong residency to the top of this list as many times as you want, and then add yourself in a solo show again once I point it out.” Does that help?
Maybe if the artist had employed this tactic in reverse, we wouldn’t be wasting time in this comment section.
Maybe.
Still, the artist is getting plenty of press either way so he can’t complain.
Now go vote for Aziz again.
FYI, Ryan. I added the Long Beach show after someone told me there was a problem over here.
NOTE: ANDY WALO did NOT add that show. I did.
I work for Andy but he is not aware of this whole thing going on but will be when he gets out of traffic and can log on.
and yes free press is good.
Banned from a site for over zealous fans is not.
This is exactly the kind of passion I’d hoped this poll would spark.
Well, good then.
FYI, I am pretty sure I know who nominated Andy in the first place and I will find out for certain and if so speak to her about the residency thing.
ryan,
i too am instantly suspicious.
how did so many votes get cast so early?
either the readership has increased exponentially since last year, or ROBOTS!
[...] then! Ready for another one of these awesome end-of-year polls, now that the first one is apparently in danger of being enshrouded in some sort of Blagojevichian scandal? (N/B: I have [...]
and here i was hoping that robots would have better taste. some future.
Walo’s vote count stopped suspiciously at 3000 on the nose…
I agree with Tommie #3 how can anyone be better than radiohead at the bowl and jay z there as well. andy what ever your name is i doubt 3000 people even know who the hell you are
And since I left my comment at 12:35 Walo has not garnerd one more vote than 3000
Aziz should be ashamed of himself.
[...] Aziz), Hall and Oates, David Liebe Hart, Sigur Ros and about 500 other concerts in our annual Best Concert poll. Get out the vote! Andy’s fan base has spoken, and is speaking still. What it is [...]
Walo has now gained 3000 votes in an hour, that is far more suspicious. If we can’t trust the results of a web poll, what kind of world are we leaving for future generations?
Yeah, well Aziz’s vote count rose just as quickly… He’s a cheater too.
200 in 1 minute… disgraceful. I weep for our nation.
Sadly, Aziz is employing the sad tactics as Andy Walo
CORRECTED REPOST
Sadly, Aziz is employing the same sad tactics as Andy Walo
Actually having fans is not the same thing as cheating. Walo doesn’t even have 1000 myspace friends, and there’s no way you can tell me that his music is worth carpal tunnel. I see bot people.
Hey Andy, you know who else listened to the White Album over and over? Manson! And his tunes were better!
I think Andy & Aziz are both cheating. Both of their vote totals surge when they decide to employ their voting robots. This whole poll is garbage because of them
Aziz posted a blog on his web site, plus a Facebook note. He has a much larger fanbase than Walo. He tours nationally and has performed at Coachella and Bonnaroo both, so I can imagine that has garnered him more fans than Walo.
Aziz owns Walo and Radiohead!
Aziz has more fans than Walo. I agree. I am a fan of Aziz. But he (or one of his fans) is clearly using a voting robot. His vote count will be stagnant for an hour, and then he will get 1500 votes in 30 minutes. It’s garbage.
aziz ansari/andy walo tour 2009???????
yes plz!
plus frank stallone as the opening act.
That’s crazy talk. Only the queen of england, huge corporations, and pauly shore could even afford tickets to a booking that colossal!
[...] now sitting in first place in the 2008 poll thanks to (Devendra side project) Megapuss, proffered no additional proof (nor comments) at press [...]
I dont believe everyone has failed to mention Aziz’s Best performance of the year?!!! In fact the WORLD debut of him and Megapuss as a dream rock ensemble and it was FREE and at by the best university in the country- UCLA! Where were u guys? Luckily the Moviebruin was on the scene…

how is aziz even on there i thought this was a concert poll not a stand up poll. what a crock of sh** this poll has turned out to be
It is a joke.
I appreciate a dry sense of humor Timmy, well done.
20 minute of pure heaven!
don’t worry everyone. the robots from last year who helped the robots win last year will help radiohead as requested on craigslist.
God bless the robots, every one.
If every 88 Boadrum drummer had just 1/10 the fans of Andy Walo, 88 Boadrum might have actually had a fighting chance against the “dude who plays on the pier”. Still, this is sort of telling me “don’t believe the hype” re: big shows. the best local concert of the year probably isn’t even on this list yet
[...] Infamous annual poll launches Friday, midday. Aziz, The Mars Volta, Radiohead and Andy Walo become fast front-runners [...]
The underground bootlegs of Paul Stanford’s historical dual-venue performance have created so much buzz that he has now rocketed up to 7th place.
We at Spin can not wait to welcome this exciting up and comer to the Penthouse of pop culture.
I have been to an Andy Walo Show. He is not the typical “Blues Band” guy. His originals have a zeppelin rock thing going on and pretty damn good. Better than radio head?, possibly not? well, each to their own opinions.
The guy does put on a great live show.
my 2 cents.
David Liebe Hart for President of the LA Area Ventriloquist Coalition!
there are two entries for Of Montreal @ the Palladium, Nov 22. can we consolidate them? thanks!
