Flame retardance; 2. Wearing a full-on leather/ette jumpsuit just looks kinda cool; 3. Not wearing them would cost street cred (you could race in jeans and flip flops but who'd take the sport seriously that way?); 4. Cultural inertia; 5. Better to plaster sponsor logos all over a jumpsuit than the alternative: having them tattooed all over your person (the latter being especially problematic if your sponsor dumps you).
