Inara George Brings Vocal Talent to Dengue Disco
By - Tuesday June 30th 2009

dengue_discoNow Hear This: Dengue Fever, arguably Losanjealous’ perennial favorite Los Angeles/Long Beach-based ’60s Cambodian Khmer pop group named after a debilitating disease, will be releasing a four-track EP entitled Radio Dance Floor, July 14. Said cassingle digi-EP (cover pictured at right, though, since it’s a digi-only-EP, much as we all surely enjoy staring at Chhom’s mug, cover art seems a bit superfluous in this instance, not unlike a few of the extraneous commas, words, and clauses in this sentence). Anyhow, the lead-in track features another Losanjealous fave, Bird and the Bee’s Inara George (have you downloaded her free tune courtesy Losanjealous and Limewire yet? Hmm?) on lead vocals, singing the disco classic “I Feel Love.” Stream it now:

Windows | Mac

Fun stuff. Now I get to hit the (digi) decks and switch between Donna Summer, Jimmy Somerville and Inara, seamlessly, while all the booties in the house are shaking madly.

Radio Dance Floor EP tracklisting:
“I Feel Love (Full Length)” 5:00
“I Feel Love (Radio Edit)” 3:34
“Clipped Wings Secret Circuit’s Cosmic Clip Mixx” (Full Length)” 8:25
“Clipped Wings Secret Circuit’s Cosmic Clip Mixx” (Radio Edit)” 5:26

GRAMMY Museum Extends MJ Wardrobe Exhibit Downtown
By - Friday June 26th 2009

histyleFor those interested in further celebrating MJ’s legacy, this one came in late last night:

In light of today’s events and in celebration of the life and work of Michael Jackson, The GRAMMY Museum has extended and repurposed the exhibit, Michael Jackson: HIStyle. Starting Friday 6/26, a collection of Jackson’s most iconic wardrobe pieces (including the suit he wore on the cover of the Thriller album) will be exhibited on the Museum’s third floor alongside video of some of his most exciting GRAMMY performances. This will all open to the public at 11:30am.

The Museum regrets having to e-mail under such unfortunate circumstances, but we hope this exhibit will serve as a fitting tribute to one of the most significant entertainers in music history.

More from the site:

Highlights include jackets worn on the Victory tour, at Jackson’s 1984 American Music Awards appearance, and at the dedication of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. All are elaborately bejeweled, beaded, and detailed – with one piece weighing nearly fifteen pounds. (source)

Under $10: Huge Banh Mi Subs at Vinh Loi Tofu
By - Thursday June 25th 2009

Way over in Reseda, miles away from the joints I usually frequent and deep in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, Vinh Loi Tofu is serving up some of the best sandwiches in town for well under 10 bucks. The modest vegan Vietnamese eatery is definitely off the beaten path, but redeems itself by offering several different banh mi subs stuffed with animal-free versions of chicken, beef, tuna, ham and curry meatballs…all of which are reasonably priced and insanely delicious.

77 Million Paintings

HEADS UP
Brian Eno (lecture) @ CSULB University Art Museum Sun Sep 20

Ho, ho! Eno fans rejoice: 77 Million Paintings lands in the Southland, at last. I caught this exhibit, perhaps best described as a hefty coalition of the smoothest iTunes visualizers with which you will ever have the opportunity to space out, some two years ago at South by Southwest (read all about it here) and I do recommend you check it out during its run, whether or not you fork over the cash for this particular lecture featuring the master himself. At $100/seat this discussion is not for the frugal by any means, but if you’re an Eno nut (as I am) and you have at least one vintage edition of Oblique Strategies sitting around your house collecting dust (and/or being actively used), you’ll probably turn out for a chance at monopolizing the microphone and throwing a question or two to the master, while the rest of the auditorium groans with impatience. Discounts: $75 before August 3 or with groups of 12 or more; $25, CSULB students. See. You. There.

Charles Phoenix’s Slide of the Week: THE END in Kodachrome, Somewhere, USA, 1969
By - Thursday June 25th 2009

cp_the_end_kodachrome
Broken twigs cleverly placed on a lawn spell out what happened to our beloved Kodachrome this week. Yes, the fine folks at Kodak, in Rochester, NY, announced that the granddaddy and gold standard of all color film has been discontinued. The last roll of Kodachrome film has left the building.

It is the end of yet another Americana icon.

Kodachrome first hit the shelves in 1935 in the form of 16mm movie film. 35mm slide film and 8mm “home” movie film came a year later. Ironically it was two musicians, not photographers that invented the miracle medium. Both had the first name of Leopold. After world war two masses of mom and pop photogs embraced Kodachrome and generously documented the colorful cultural explosion of Americana.
