CONGRATULATIONS to Joey Chestnut, who downed an unprecedented 68 Nathan’s Famous hot dogs in 10 minutes at noon EST today, the fourth of July, at the corner of Surf and Stillwell on Coney Island, setting a new world record and keeping the Mustard Belt right here at home WHERE IT BELONGS. Fellow USA gurgitator and wig-and-vintage-ruffle-shirt-clad daytime chef Pat Bertoletti also showed remarkable prowess, downing some 55 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

Chestnut told ESPN that he plans to eat a Cobb salad with ranch dressing for dinner this evening, offering further proof that the USA can and will eat more than any other country. Never forget that. Happy 4th!

The sport of competitive eating is pretty disgusting and fascinating at the same time.
Joey Chestnut has won for the third time but I don’t think he’s quite reached the legendary status of Takeru Kobayashi. Chestnut weighed in at 218 pounds against Kobayashi’s 132 pounds. I haven’t weighed 132 since… elementary school? Kobayashi won Nathans 6 times in a row and one article I read said he would be retiring after this year. The first time he won, he doubled the previous record and put competitive eating on the map. I’m not sure anyone will be able to top that.
Nobody’s doubting Kobayashi’s status as one of the greatest eaters of the decade, let’s be clear. He did put competitive eating (on a grand, sponsored, foolhardy scale) on the map. Chestnut, on the other hand, may just be the chosen one. He might eat, say, North Korea, or even a questionable election in Iran, should his country call on him to do so, and provided he has some gulp-cups of water nearby.
