And Tara Lipinski has WHAT to do with the Dodgers?

I’ve seen plenty of puzzling billboards and advertising in LA. They’re usually viral marketing of some sort for an upcoming film. This one has me truly stumped, though.
Tara Lipinski (looking somewhat like a cross between Shakira and Shawn Johnson in this one) looms stories high above the 10 freeway sans any sort of Dodger t-shirt, cap or giant foam finger on a Dodgertown billboard stating “This is my town”. A pair of ice skates is thrown in for good measure, because…you know… LA is an ice skating kind of town.
Last I checked, Tara was born in Philly, grew up in New Jersey and Texas and finally moved to Detroit where she trained for the Olympics.
This seems like an image more suited for a Wheaties box 10 years ago than a Dodgers billboard. I’m grasping at straws trying to come up with a connection. A quick survey of friends, family and RYAN yielded these equally unlikely guesses and cynical replies:
- She’s dating a player
- Michelle Kwan who SHOULD have been on the billboard wouldn’t do it
- It makes no sense
- They’re trying to get more Dodger Fans to skate in Pershing Square
- Tonya Harding’s next
- They had to cover up the Manny billboard and this was the only celebrity photo available on a Creative Commons license. The skates were clip art.
- She wrote a column for the LA Times about Ice Skating so of course it makes sense that she’s on a Dodgers billboard.
- She threw out the ceremonial pitch at a Dodgers game in 2007 so of course she should be on a Dodgers billboard (along with Anil Kapur, the fire chief of Pasadena and Adam Carolla).
- Her agent has some filthy photos of Frank McCourt.

i’m going with: “They had to cover up the Manny billboard and this was the only celebrity photo available on a Creative Commons license. The skates were clip art.”
haha, so random.
i wonder which skater the angels will counter with.
Not to be outdone, the Angels will counter with Apollo Anton Ono and his soul patch.
Be fair. Nicole Bobek was busy.
The economy has hit the Dodgers so hard, that a random Texas skater from the 90’s is the best they could afford.
She’s just a hasbeen who never “made it” despite winning a gold medal in the Winter Games. No one remembers her unless you are a hardcore skating fan. And even they could care less.
Tara’s been living in LA for over 10 years. It’s her town as much as anyone else. What percentage of Angelenos are actually BORN there?
Tara toured with SOI for FOUR years after she won the olympics in 1998. She moved back to Texas with her parents after that and then moved to LA to be an actress. She’s been living in LA for 5 years MAX.
Not to be outdone, the Angels will wear Oksana Baiul hats for the rest of the season.
I’m not bothered by a Tara Lipinski billboard because she’s relevant to sports. What I’d like to know is what screwing Ray-J on video & accidentally, on purpose, leaking that video for profit which is what you do when you don’t have a job and need money to perpetuate your faux lifestyle has to do with the Dodgers. If you don’t have cable, Internet access, a cell phone/PDA from the 21st century, aren’t into PDAs, S&M, missionary sex or interracial relationships then you don’t know I’m referring to Kim Kardashian. I almost wrecked a year-and-a-half old (I know, the 2010s are almost out) Range Rover today screwfacing at a damn Dodgers billboard wondering what she has to do with baseball.
Then, it struck me – she swallows footlong hotdogs whole.
To gag or not to gag, that is the question. When I see Kim, I gag, no question.
Uh, Hime, sweetie, I’m a born and raised “Angeleno”. I am sick of the transplants which may explain why I’m itching like I’m having an eczema attack to escape the hell that L.A. has become.
It takes someone 10 years residency to become a U.S. citizen. If Tara has been in L.A. 10 years, not only is she a native Angeleno, she’s likely as bitter and disgusted by what occurs in this city as folks who were born and raised here as I am.
Deuces.
A couple of points:
Tara has a home in LA so this is her town.
She is a LA team fan – she goes to Dodger, Laker and Kings games.
She does more for charity than any other skater so she is a great role model.
Kwan is missing something – like that little Olympic goldy thing – Kwan choked twice (in 98 and 02) and took a spot from another American in 06 and didn’t compete.
“Kwan is missing something – like that little Olympic goldy thing – Kwan choked twice (in 98 and 02) and took a spot from another American in 06 and didn’t compete.”
Well, i found your comment rude. Michelle is missing one title yes. An Olympic Gold Medal. Regardless of an Olympic Gold Medal, she will still be regarded as one of the greatest figure skaters of all time. Michelle didn’t “choke” at either Olympics. In 1998, Michelle skated well, but skated to early for the judges to wrap up the competion and give 6.0’s. (Remember she was the first skater) So with that in mind, I believe, Tara had the edge of waiting in the line up. In 2002, she didn’t “choke.” The word you used should be substiuted to another word. Even with the one fall on the triple flip, had the judges placed her 2nd in the freeskate, Michelle would have been the overall winner. So again, it came down to the judges marks. (btw, Irina’s program IMO didn’t cut it out for a silver medal.) And in 2006, Michelle didn’t “take” (you used took) someone elses spot on the Olympic Team. She earned it. Had the USOC felt she would not be the best to respresent the United States, they could have sent Emily right away. Instead, they looked back to Michelle’s elusive career, and thought she was best deserving. However, an re-injury hit while practicing in Torino and she graciously withdrew from the Olympics. Emily competed well and came in 7th.
I am not a hater of Tara, or I ever will be. I just wanted to reply to your post. No matter the reason why she is on the billboard, she’s on it and we can’t change it. She does indeed look pretty in it.
Well……let’s compare you two: Tara, Olympic gold medalist, was seen by millions of people on T.V. and has a complete page on Wiki, which can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tara_Lipinski
In this corner we have Jeannette, a shallow mean spirited little thing, who has her own little page on a blog, with a small group of mean little idiots who hang on every post. Let me think about this……… Hmmmmmmm. I’ll go with TARA as being the person who out of the two, will be just a wee bit immortalized, 50 years from now, vs. Jeannette, who will be entirely forgotten about 10 years after she is deceased.
Dave,
50 years from now, neither Tara Lipinski nor I will be remembered because our fame will be eclipsed by the legacy of Sanjaya Malakar.
