ZZ Top @ House of Blues Anaheim Thu Aug 20
ZZ Top @ House of Blues Sunset Strip Fri Aug 21 (both on sale tomorrow)

The bearded blues-and-legs impresarios that comprise ZZ Top, in light of the now-cancelled-due-to-Steven-Tyler’s-Sturgis-stage-mishap Aerosmith/ZZ Top tour, are officially mounting their own (smaller) headlining tour, post-haste:

“We, like so many fans, are disappointed that we’re not going to be out with Aerosmith and we wish Steven a speedy recovery,” said ZZ Top’s Dusty Hill.

ZZ’s Billy Gibbons chimed in, “As musicians, we sometimes have to improvise and that’s exactly what this tour is about. We’re going to get out there as quickly as possible and to play for people who want to come to a ‘down ‘n’ dirty’ rock and roll show – no frills and no holds bared.”

“When we found out that the tour was going to be cancelled, we got together and decided that since we’re ready, willing and able, we should get out there immediately and get it on and that’s exactly what we intend to do,” said Frank Beard of the decision to move on.

New ZZ Top dates, informally known within the band’s inner circle as the “Necessity-Is-A-Mother Tour,” will be posted on as they are confirmed. (Paris image via

Two pressing weekend reminders and one more new announcement after the jump…

David Liebe Hart and Adam Papagan @ Echo Curio tonight (billed as part of David Liebe Hart’s Summer Concert Series)

Chances area you already know Dave, even if you don’t think that you do. He’s a puppet master who sings songs about Korendians and Jesus, hangs out near the Hollywood Bowl gate, appears regularly on Tim&Eric, and he would love to meet you. The pairing with Adam Papagan makes for a compelling case, any way you slice it – so much so that this quirky duo merited a track on our recent 100%-free, 100%-local-artists Limewire compilation giveaway. Download for yourself and see why Echo Curio is the place to be this evening.

Flaming Lips + Lots of Beer @ Del Mar Racetrack Sat Aug 15 (tomorrow) – loosely starting after the last horse race, or probably around 730-8pm.

Can’t afford to go see the traveling Oklahoma ticker-tape fiasco at the Greek or the Pomona Fox Theatre this week, and worried you might not win tickets from us? (Yes, of course, per usual, we’re giving away tix to both shows.) Times are tough; we empathize. Head to San Diego County tomorrow and for $6, you’re inside the racetrack, the beer festival, and the concert all in one fell swoop. As a proud Oklahoman by birth, I’ll be there. Look for me. First round is on me. For all of you. All seven of you. I expect to win big in that last race and all of the proceeds are going straight to your head and belly.

Common, The Roots, De La Soul, Ludacris and Nas @ Hollywood Palladium

Final weekend note: “Hennessy Artistry is the presenting sponsor of the 2009 Common Ground Benefit in Los Angeles, featuring a blend of performances by Common, The Roots, De La Soul, Ludacris and Nas.” All of the aforementioned artists will be playing the Palladium, September 26; tickets go on sale tomorrow. Proceeds will benefit The Common Ground Foundation, which is “committed to the empowerment and development of urban youth in the United States.”
