Princeton is playing a special Spaceland show with Parson Red Heads and The Coals tomorrow, Saturday, December 12. For this second night of Hanukkah, the band are promising 8 gifts to be given away to lucky audience members in attendance.
Fool’s Gold will be offering 8 days of freebies on their MySpace page. They kicked off the giving today with a download of video from their recent KCRW MBE sesh.
Coincidentally, Luke of Fool’s Gold will be DJ’ing the big HEEBONISM event at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs on December 24. Might have to say more about this later, including a run down on the notable porn stars who will be in attendance.

Over at Morrissey-solo.com, reviews from last night’s Morrissey show at the Gibson Amphitheater are starting to come in from the devoted. As is usually the case these days, they are split evenly between the defenders and detractors. However, the negative takes stand out this time as they aren’t so much critiquing the show as expressing real concern. Here’s a sampling from the message board.
…I am afraid this could be the last show.
His singing was off, there was lots of slurring, or skipping lyrics altogether, and he seemed out of focus and – to be honest – going through the motions. I am sure other in the audience who’ve seen him felt like me, uncomfortable and concerned, when he did these things. [link]

Morrissey habitually hates the mix on stage; when he can’t hear properly he can’t locate his center of pitch. Many boots capture him painfully out of tune for whole verses. He’s not losing his voice, he’s just losing the key. For all his talents, it’s a weakness of his; always has been.
Anyway, in his diva way, rather than step to the side of the stage and have a word with the sound peeps, during moments of “acoustic duress” Moz will grimace and groan and, wait for it, stop singing a lyric or two.
So that’s what happened last night. I was down front and I couldn’t be more sure of it. [link]

Real quick run down. Moz having vocal problems all night, as mentioned by previous posters, skipping many lyrics, voice cracking, and drinking copiously between songs from the metallic green container. There was also a red metallic container onstage. One person who got the mic (April?) asked Morrissey to please use to cough drops she gave him.
From the third song onwards, I thought Morrissey might leave the stage at any time. He looked extremely ticked off with the problems of his throat. It was a tense evening and the worst live gig I’ve seen him do (of the ones he actually completed) all year.
I predict a 90% chance of cancellation for Ventura. [link]

I’ve seen Moz not as often as some on this board, but enough to appreciate a good show when I’m at it. Considering that Cemetary Gates was released when I was getting my driver’s license, and I’m now 39 years old, I thought the man looked and sounded great. His mood is often the best indicator, and he seemed in good spirits. He never likes the sound mix on stage, and frequently skips lyrics. Especially high notes, but it’s our job to fill those in, as we don’t have to do it every night. Just my opinion — a pretty good show, T. Lennon [link]

PHOTO by Sung. Dengue Fever on stage at the 2009 Outside Lands Festival.
Have you heard the big news? Metallica’s Kirk Hammett has selected “One Thousand Tears of A Tarantula” by our own Dengue Fever for his Decade’s Best Song List for Rolling Stone magazine. The track comes in at #2 just behind his #1 “Everything In It’s Right Place” (the selection of which by the metal axe god Hammett in itself raises its own curiosity).
Hammet’s full list for RS below.

Found these new Lost character shots ABC just released over on /Film. For some sick reason, I am sitting here studying photos of actors against a plain gray backdrop for clues. Such is the abusive relationship of Lost to its fans–so much invested, so little given back. Figure if I throw them up here, maybe some clues will shake out. Why are there 31 shots? What is the significance of 31? Why are there 4 pictures of Kate yet only 3 of Jack and Sawyer?! And there MUST be SOME reason Sun and Jin are both wearing V-NECK shirts! The V must stand for something!

First returns of balloting for the all star starting line-ups have been released and to no one’s surprise, Kobe’s leading the world in votes. His inclusion is a forgone conclusion, so maybe a more interesting side story is the long shot that the Lakers can land 3 of their 5 starters–Kobe, Pau & Bynum–on the Western Conference’s starting line up. Voting is open for another 38 days, so be sure to vote early and often. Apparently the system logs your IP or uses a cookie to keep you from voting more than once within a 24-hour period. Get creative!
Full Western Conference vote tally breakdown below.

Sorry to see him go. Wolfie was fairly reliable on the mound–11-7 with a ton of no decisions–in his one year stint with The Blue Crew . I just might move to Milwaukee for nearly $30 mil for three years myself as well.
Still to early to know whether he will be selling off Slash’s former crib in the Hills he bought from repeat surprise-guest-appearing rocker back in ’07.

Minor chuckle out of this Hollywood.com bite:
KEVIN BACON’s actress wife KYRA SEDGWICK is unhappy with the placement of the power couple’s stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
She explains, “They put us right next to each other in this shady area. It’s right outside of this nightclub… Isn’t it wonderful when people stumble out at three in the morning they’re going to throw up on both of our stars?”
That unnamed nightclub at 6356 Hollywood Blvd would be Cinespace. While curbside vomiting might be a regular occurrence around there (Steve Aoki’s birthday party was there last night, after all) but anyone calling that area “shady” only serves to reveal the bubble from reality in which they must live.

HighSnobiety.com has the press release from yesterday’s event at The Forum:
Nike and Kobe Bryant today introduced the Zoom Kobe V, Nike’s lightest basketball shoe ever, at a global media event held at The L.A. Forum in Los Angeles. Rising to Bryant’s challenge of making his signature sneaker even lighter and lower than the previous iteration, Nike Performance Footwear Creative Director Eric Avar came up with a 10.6 ounce low-cut performance shoe – one ounce lighter than the Nike Zoom Kobe IV. [MORE]
While SneakerNews.com has shots of the event & SLAM promises far more in-depth sneaker analysis to come.
We’ll have continuous Nike Zoom Kobe V coverage as they come closer to landing on store shelves on January 16.
