Postcard for the East Coast: President’s Day in Santa Monica
By Victor - Monday February 15th 2010 |
Sunlight from a gorgeous 72-degree day filters through the windows of King’s Head pub in Santa Monica, around 2 p.m. today. Manchester City vs. Stoke football on one telly, snowboard cross Olympic qualifying on the others. (Go Graham Watanabe!)
I did actually get out in the sunshine a bit after getting a pint (Black & Tan) in me. Nokia E71 phone shot of the pier from the Ocean Ave. bluff below.

Little Ones Added to Gomez Bill
It’s been a fairly quiet period of late for local pop favorites The Little Ones. No live shows of late, no website updates since October. (With Little Boots and Little Dragon ascendant in the same period, the “Little” spot is warm for their return.)
But there are signs of a reemergence this Spring: they have been added to the bill for Night 1 of Gomez’s pair of shows March 20 & 21 at the El Rey, as well as the night before, Night 3 of Gomez’s 3-night-stand at the Great American Music Hall up in San Francisco.
Hopefully there’s some new music coming along with these shows.

They Let Shannon Dunk; Shannon Lets Us Down
By Victor - Monday February 15th 2010 |
Was that it? After all the hype–including my own–that was it?
If you cared at all, you know by now that Shannon Brown failed to advance out of the first round of the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. 5-foot-something Nate Robinson won for a 3rd straight year, subsequently (thankfully) announcing his retirement. DeMar DeRozan, straight out of Compton (and USC) had a solid showing, going up against Nate in the final round.
Two relatively conservative dunks just wasn’t going to do it for Shannon. And if you bring out a Kobe Bryant to assist, you don’t just have him stand there and lob you a softball to dunk. Hell, I could have done that much.
The frustrating thing is his old McDonald’s High School All American slam dunk appearance from back in 2003 (where he would lose to some guy named LeBron) arguably showed more skill and creativity. As well as his funny-looking cornrow hair style. It’s here in some lousy quality 2003-era YouTube.
Clip of his two middling dunks from this past weekend below, should you want to relive the non-magic.

Philippe’s–Open For Business
L.A. eatery reopens after … incident [KABC.com]
It’s a shame that for being closed by the Health Dept. for less than 2 days to address infestation concerns, LA institution Philippe’s is going to be saddled with Google results associating their name with code violations. (The Yelperati have already started to chime in on it.) It re-opened this morning–A-rating intact–as stories about the closing were still trickling out.

Farmer’s Market by Wells
By Victor - Friday February 12th 2010 |
I don’t know exactly why, but this mostly unremarkable snap by NYC-based film & movie biz writing bad ass Jeffrey Wells–a daily stop on the web, out here on the Left Coast for the Santa Barbara Film Fest–seems to tap into a certain mid-week evening Farmer’s Market feel that floats in under that low roof now and again. Not quite melancholy or ennui, but just a certain everyday blah, away from the karaoke and the happy hours, under unflattering fluorescent lights, unglamorous real people, trudging in for groceries and trudging back home.

Farewell, “Victorious Youth”–Getty Bronze Statue Headed Back to Italy
From AOL News:
The J. Paul Getty Museum says it will “vigorously defend” its right to hold on to an ancient Greek statue that an Italian court ruled should be seized and returned to Italy.
The “Victorious Youth” bronze statue, better known as the Getty Bronze, was unexpectedly dredged from the sea in 1964 by a fishing trawler from Fano, Italy, a few miles south of Pesaro, where the court ruling was made Thursday.
The life-size statue, probably looted by the Romans, dates from the second or third century B.C. and is widely regarded as one of the finest Greek originals to have survived. The Italians claim it was smuggled out of Italy without the proper export papers, but the Getty says it bought the statue for $4 million through legal channels in 1977. [MORE]
In other news, AOL apparently still exists.

Breaking news out of Action 5 WMC-TV in Memphis:

The Rusnak Auto Group is proud to report that Rusnak Volvo Pasadena has been named a recipient of the prestigious Volvo President’s Club Award. The Club acknowledges outstanding performance of the top 10 percent of all Volvo retailers nationwide.
“All year long, we’ve been focusing on the details, big and small, and putting our customers first,” said General Manager, Yohan Haddad. “We’ve had our sights set on this award, and the fact that we achieved it is a testament to the men and women of this dealership and their hard work.”
“It’s all about the customer and Rusnak Volvo understands that,” said Doug Speck, president & CEO of Volvo Cars of North America. “By all accounts, 2009 was a difficult year. But, even in the face of a difficult economic environment, Rusnak Volvo stood tall above the crowd.”
