Bruce Eric Kaplan & Dan Savage Tonight, Open Projector Night Tomorrow Night @ Hammer Museum
By Victor - Wednesday February 10th 2010 |
The Open Projector Night (Thurs., Feb. 11, 7:30 p.m.) is exactly what it sounds like–open mic for short films. Surprisingly entertaining if a bit uncomfortable and cringe-inducing at times. You feel bad for the filmmaker that gets his or her flick booed right there with them in the room. Sometimes, at least. The Sklar Brothers (that’s not them pictured above, that’s BEK and Dan Savage–first pic I found) are funny quick wits hosting. Cash popcorn and free bar. I mean, free popcorn and cash bar. Whoops.

Non-News: Hints of Belle & Sebastian Activity, Recording New Material, Live Apperances
By Victor - Wednesday February 10th 2010 |
Passing along some non-news from one of the 1,575 band pages my WebUpdateTracker2000 is constantly tracking.
The splash page at belleandsebastian.com is updated today with a hint at an announcement of some upcoming live appearances. Probably U.K. or European late summer festivals, but who knows. Given the glacial pace at which these guys move, I’ll take any sign of activity is positive.
There’s also this crumb in their Q&A section:

Newcastle Brown Ale DraughtKeg Debuts in LA
By Ryan - Tuesday February 09th 2010 |
FTC Compliance Disclosure: Some Newcastle rep wanted to give us free beer to drink during the Superbowl. In turn we decided to write this post about the free beer, which came in wee Newcastle kegs. They even sent a couple of wee Newcastle pub towels our way. Why not enjoy a pub-style pint of America’s No.1 imported ale fresh off the tap of a Newcastle DraughtKeg today. The five-liter mini-keg serves up to 10 pints of Newcastle Brown Ale, offering a perfect pour and incredible smoothness.
It’s sleek, portable, recyclable and perfect for any Super Bowl party but you can only find it in select cities including Los Angeles. Check it out at local grocery stores like Albertson’s for $22.99. Below, verbatim txtscript from the inboxes of your very own Losanjealous Editorial staff, pre-Superbowl…

Any plans? Any desire to get together?
We have 20 pints of Newcastle Brown to plow through among other things, lest you forget. Recommend chill at least 10 hours prior to serving.

Local Natives Stream Debut LP Gorilla Manor at NPR.org
Our own Local Natives are attracting some national attention these days, landing a plumb spot on NPR.org to preview their debut LP, Gorilla Manor, just ahead of its release next Tuesday 2/16 on Frenchkiss Records.
They’re over in Europe (Rome tonight) now but come back Stateside for SXSW, Coachella and Bonnaroo.

Wild Beasts Kick off First U.S Tour Tomorrow at Troubadour

Wild Beasts w/ Still Life Still & Magic Bullets @ Troubadour Wed 2/10
A dreamy new video for “We Still Got The Taste Dancin’ On Our Tongues” off of their second record Two Dancers (Guardian’s #3 LP of 2009) went up today and I’ll stick it below the jump.
Giving that lush record a listen today, it’s the elegance and willful artiness that really strike you. Their singer Hayden Thorpe has one of those singular singing voices that don’t come along too often in (indie) rock. Apparently there are still some tickets left for the show tomorrow. Whether you make it or not, be sure to check back here later for Sung’s coverage from the show.

In The Loop–Egyptian Theater Engagement–Director Armando Iannucci in Person, Feb. 14
By Victor - Tuesday February 09th 2010 |
HEADS UP
In The Loop @ Egyptian Theater
Feb 10-14
The Sunday, 2/14 4 pm screening will feature an appearance by the film’s director, Armando Iannucci. It you aren’t familiar with his resume in British comedy, he’s well worth investigating, starting (obviously) with the Alan Partridge stuff.
IMDB has a nice compendium of stand out quotes displaying the hilarious, vulgar verbal gymnastics from In The Loop (probably NSFW if your boss can read 14-pt font on your screen).
