Science! Team Legit v. LADD Ri-ettes, 3/27/2010 @ the Doll Factory
By DF - Wednesday March 31st 2010 |
Let’s see… Pie to the fourteenth, divided by Avocadro’s number, carry the hypotenuse… Oh, hello, readers! You interrupted DF as he was doing some serious number-crunching in advance of tonight’s derby contest. You see, readers, DF is a man of knowledge and learning, not some lily-livered, lunchpail-toting lummox who doesn’t even know the difference between Alfred Einstein and … some other good scientists. And he’s now going to take a purely empirical, hard-headed approach to this eve’s bout between LADD all-star outfit the Ri-Ettes and West Coast flat-track elite ensemble Team Legit.
DF at the Doll Factory, anticipating game onset. His excitement level is at 7.8 heartbeats per second, as this promises to be a particularly intense matchup (and also likely because he’s had six five-hour energys in the last hour). The Ri-ettes have loads of talent and more banked-track experience, but Legit’s got the fleetest and hardest-hitting of all the WFDTA skaters on their side, and recent matchups suggest that the best flat-track skaters aren’t too fazed by making the transition to skating on the slant. Let’s see, if you calculate the amount of adrenaline in the air (discounted by the fog of Axe Body Spray in which DF always travels), divide by the net volume of the Doll Factory, and interpolate thusly, you get a match that’s 99% likely to be awesome as shit (+/- 1% error rate). It’s on.

World Fare: Putting the Fuck Back in Food Truck
By Mike - Wednesday March 31st 2010 |
Does anyone else wish we could go back to the food truck gold rush of a mere year ago? When guys would dart out of bars–giving up the chance of drunken hook-ups–in hopes of grabbing one of the last Kogi short-rib tacos. When gourmet food truck culture was not just new to Los Angeles, but it was actually gourmet.
Well, I am happy to report the new World Fare food truck, in Clark Kent-fashion, has swept in and saved the day. World Fare joins the likes of the Border Grill truck in the exclusive pantheon of trucks that aren’t just good “for a food truck” but rather simply good for being damn good.
And, to be honest, it isn’t even fair to call World Fare a food truck. I wouldn’t call it a “bustaurant” either (though its owners do) because, well, that’s lame. But it certainly is an experience. Combining the wonders of South African street food, fine blackboard cuisine specials, Albert Hammond Jr. tunes and the touristic voyeurism of a double-decker bus, it really takes the Los Angeles food culture to another level. Literally.

Now Playing: The Notorious xx–Biggie/The xx Mashup
By Victor - Wednesday March 31st 2010 |
If you’ve been in our lobby these last few days (sorry for the old magazines–but does anyone ever really read an entire New Yorker in a week?) there’s a good chance you heard Wait What’s mashup of Biggie & the xx playing in the background, instead of our usual 94.7 The Wave. Grab it now for free before a cease & desist kills it.

The Morning Benders Impress At First Headlining Troubadour Show
By Liz - Saturday March 27th 2010 |
The Morning Benders looked and sounded like a seasoned veteran band Thursday at the Troubadour in LA, despite not looking a day over 16. I’m actually not sure how old they are (18?), and for the most part, it couldn’t have mattered less. Lead singer and guitarist Chris Chu, though still adjusting to the spotlight, delivered the band’s critically acclaimed indie tracks almost flawlessly to the packed, LA venue.
“You guys came to see us?” he asked, after mentioning that the San Francisco band had played the venue as an opener a few times before. Yes, we came to see The Morning Benders, especially after the release of their incredible Rough Trade debut, Big Echo. They proved themselves instantly, grabbing everyone’s attention with “Stitches,” as the line “you don’t know me by name” built into a sea of guitar distortion and pounding drums.
After that, they seemed to take a deep breath and start again, going right into “Promises” and never looking back. »continue reading The Morning Benders Impress At First Headlining Troubadour Show
