‘Tis another great week to be in Los Angeles, to be sure, with the Books, Nick Cave’s Grinderman, Wu-Tang, Roger Waters, McCoy Tyner, Kyp Malone, Flying Lotus, Kool Keith, Jens Lekman, The Posies, Passion Pit and many more all stomping through town. And though Ron begged, pleaded and offered bribes toward the pick-of-the-week leaning to camp Margaret Cho, the week’s pick goes handily to Charlie Hunter, whose now-annual two-night stand at the Mint simply demands attention. Expect two nights of jammy funk, stabilized by the master craftsman’s mind-boggling mastery of the one-of-a-kind seven-stringed Hammond organ-emulating beast Charlie calls a “guitar”. And though he’s shared stages and played on record with the likes of Stanton Moore, Norah Jones, Christian McBride and Kurt Elling, to name but a few, rest assured these shows will be anything but exclusive to the jazz cats. Just ask John Mayer, Les Claypool, Michael Franti, D’Angelo or Mos Def. Catch you at the Mint this weekend.

ABOVE: While writing up THE PLACE‘s truck and informing the driver he needs to move his vehicle, one of ten vying for westside lunchtime dollars on Pennsylvania Avenue, a motorcycled member of the Santa Monica Police Department is photographed today both by the woman with the DSLR camera and the telephone of the author, who looks on with a curiously sweet-and-sour emotional mix of glee and dismay while scarfing food from a competing and possibly soon-to-be-written-up-as-well truck.

Since we originally heard from The Green Truck more than one year ago regarding the shakedown and anti-truck sentiments occurring at that time near Museum Square, Wilshire Blvd, we’ve had various legislature handed down, we’ve had health grades approved, we’ve heard more than once that trucks are soon to be the way of the dodo, and we’ve heard more than twice that trucks are here to stay. The trucks do appear “here to stay”, of course, and with them comes the ever-present threat of a ticket by The Man, both a cost of doing business and a dependable source of municipal revenue for the cities in which both inhabit.

So I found myself at my usual Tuesday night hang, the Sherman Oaks Guitar Center, which I hit up to lay down some sweet licks right after hitting up The Infield for their $2 dog Tuesdays.

After I get kicked out of the G.C., I come out onto Ventura to find that the newish Lardon bacon-centric food truck is parked just down the block. Figured since I only had three dogs at The Infield, I had room try something light from Lardon. I went with the B.L.T., the eponymous “Lardon” sandwich itself.

It was adequate enough sustenance for $6. But to me, came up short on achieving that Transcendent B.L.T. Effect (T.B.L.T.E.) one can get from a perfect B.L.T. Where leavened bread, seared beast flesh, ripe vegetable and mayonnaise, representing the grains, greens, wild animals and mayonnaise of Mother Gaia, conspire in a toasty, cool, savory unified taste and texture harmony.
