Revisiting A Hotel Room Chat with Wanda Jackson, First Lady of Rock N’ Roll
By - Monday January 24th 2011

Wanda in 2007

What with Wanda and Jack setting fire to the El Rey again this evening, we thought it only fitting to redirect your eyeballs to this 2008 off-the-cuff chat with Wanda, by Daiana. Photos by Daiana as well. Enjoy. Maybe go poke around the archives, find a few photos of Jack shredding to go along with this, or something. -Ed

Man Charged After Striking Santa Monica Restaurant Worker With Crab Leg
By - Friday January 21st 2011

Tim over at the SM Mirror reports today on a police blotter highlight which occurred last Friday in Santa Monica:

… The suspect had taken a fresh approach, gone out on a limb, and stolen a crab leg from the buffet. When the staff confronted the suspect, he hit a staff member with the crab leg. The suspect then fled the location. Officers went in search of, discovered, and netted this seafood pirate a short distance away.

More punny giggles over at the Mirror; my personal illustration accompanies the excerpt here. Attention Tim: Please get in touch as I see us going places, fast.

dublab Celebrates Trish Keenan, shares Live Broadcast Recording from 2000
By - Wednesday January 19th 2011

Trishdublab kindly passes along a download of a great soundboard recording of the live set by Broadcast at the El Rey back in 2000, opening for Godspeed You! Black Emperor, a show I remember fondly.

It was very upsetting to read news about the passing of Trish Keenan–one of my personal favorites–at just 42 years-old last week. It’s small consolation, but at least we have her inspired art on record for posterity. I dug out all their releases last weekend and renewed my awe at the spectrum of sound Broadcast managed to capture. Every song they committed to tape feels as if it absolutely needed to exist. 2003′s Ha Ha Sound, in particular, leapt out at me anew, this time around. Put that one on good, loud speakers today and just sit back and wow. 2006′s The Future Crayon release also serves up new rewards upon a fresh relistening. Most bands would be lucky to put out a proper album as good as this compilation of b-sides and e.p tracks. Thanks to dublab for the nice live recording to further remember her by.

The Impossible Project provided de Wilde with some of the last remaining original Polaroid film stock for the project. 50 of the photos will be presented in exhibition at the Impossible Project (425 Broadway) for our NYC friends from January 26 to February 29 . Autumn and the band will be in person at the exhibition’s opening on opening night.

Kind of Digging this Max Kellerman Radio Show
By - Tuesday January 18th 2011

MaxAnyone else? His newish 10am-2pm sports rap slot here in town on ESPN 710 am that is. Normally, I don’t cotton to New Yorkers carpetbagging to the LA market. And as a rule, I tend to hate anyone with the particular facial hair depicted in that photo. But I gotta admit, I’m was kind of feeling Max’s show the few times I’ve caught it so far. I’ll have to keep listening to really get a handle on what he’s all about. Or maybe it’s just that AM sports radio in this town is mostly a wasteland and anyone with a scintilla of intelligence and attitude will rise above. (Don’t get me started on Petros and “Money”. I’ll get around to laying out a list of crimes by those two meatheads some other day.)
